Description
The Colossus of Rhodes was a giant bronze covered statue of the sun god Helios, erected by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC to celebrate Rhodes' victory over Cyprus.
Though frequently depicted since mediaeval times as bestriding the harbour entrance, it has been demonstrated that that would be a mechanical impossibility, as it would have collapsed under its own weight. In any case, contemporary descriptions and carvings suggest it overlooked the harbour from a white marble pedestal, with a hand shielding its eyes and rays emanating from the head. The Colossus was approximately the size of the statue of Liberty in New York, making it the tallest statue of the ancient world.
The original colossus was short-lived; it collapsed during the earthquake of 226 BC. There have been various rather fanciful proposals to re-erect one, but at a cost of several hiunderd million euro that seems to be unlikely!

That said, if there were no pyramids left today, we'd most probably say the same, that it was impossible to build with the current construction technics at that time etc, and yet they made it. Anyway, great looking scene :)
