"Who am I? I am the Curator. When the members of the Academy agreed to sever the campus from its tether in space/time, they understood that in doing so, they would become immaterial, facets of a ghostly apparition drifting between realities. They would forfeit their corporeal bodies and their essences would become forever entangled with the Academy's quantum shadow. It was a sacrifice they were willing to make in order to save the knowledge and artifacts preserved within the Academy. But, their work was not yet complete. When the time came for the Academy to fade into the infinitesimal framework of the universe, there was still a vast amount of scientific knowledge to acquire and preserve. The Academy needed a manager, a custodian, a guardian -- someone to carry on their work after they forever departed from this reality. Knowing that their lives would soon come to an end, the Academy members gathered in the Chancellor's lecture hall and voted one final time. The question: who would become the Academy's custodian? The vote was taken. One of their members was selected to take on the mantle of immortality and become the Academy's custodian. Charged with continuing the Academy's mission and stewarding the extensive collection of scientific knowledge and works of art, the lone scholar underwent a terrible transformation. Bone was turned to metal. Skin became carbon fiber. Blood was replaced with synthetic fluid. The scholar's personality, memories, and emotions were harvested from his biological form and uploaded into his new, artificial body. The digitally preserved aspects of his scholarly peers were also transferred to his neural matrix so that he would carry their knowledge, experiences, and memories with him. Together, they would navigate the causal tides of eternity. The scholar became more than a man, yet less than human. He became the Curator."
