The Singularity Harness "Ah, yes, Polonius and Lady Penelope, that is a Singularity Harness. Long ago, during the time period known as the Expansion, humankind travelled to every corner of the galaxy. With the help of Forerunner technology, planets that were once uninhabitable were transformed into new homes for our race. The Expansion also brought humanity to the brink of irregular space; vast areas of interstellar space filled with dark matter. The concentrations of dark matter created regions where quantum mechanics and the laws of physics failed to govern the behaviors of particles and larger bodies. It was in these areas of irregular space where we first encountered the Singularities. Far more dense than standard black holes, these gravitational anomalies not only captured and deconstructed matter and light, they also distorted time and twisted the fabric of reality. Further investigation revealed that the Singularities were more than just interstellar phenomena -- they were sentient beings. But, they were dying. Slowly suffocating as the concentrations of dark matter built up around them, the Singularities were perishing, victims of their own gravitational power. A plan was made to save the remaining Singularities. Devices were created to collect, house, and sustain these ancient and powerful creatures. The pinnacle of humankind’s scientific and technological achievements, each Singularity Harness held one Singularity. In return for their safekeeping, the Singularities agreed to give of their unlimited power to humanity’s efforts, allowing us to direct their enormous gravitational energies. Over the centuries, the Harnesses were used by our race to power interstellar transit vehicles, rekindle dying suns, build trans-galactic gateways, and circumnavigate time. As the Age of Expansion faded, so did our use of the Harnesses. One by one, the devices disappeared, as if slowly being erased from our collective memory. Some members of the Academy believe the Forerunners left the Singularities for us to discover and use during the Expansion. Others posit that the Singularities themselves were the last space/time-bound remnants of the Forerunner race that eventually made the complete transition to another universe.
