Description

On paper the City Class Battleship was a war winning weapon with 60 x 2 Megaton Nuclear Plasma guns. The premier ship of the line at the start of the Plutorian Revolutian. But the defensive policies of the Terran government meant each ship was parked in Earth orbit as soon as they came off the Luna shipyards, very rarely were any released to take part in action, effectively ceding the tactical war to the Plutorian rebels. The ship was designed for mass production with no FTL capability and a single fission motor. Plate armour was discarded for the first time in a capital ship in favour of layered electro magnietic shields. To combat the slow rate of fire of the 2 MT cannon the "Pencil" hull of the ship rotated at 1 revs per 4 minutes so that each battery of ten guns would bear on an enemy at 40 second intervals, giving an apparent rate of fire of 40 seconds instead of the actual 240 seconds it took to purge waste plasma from the guns. The disc hull remained apparently stationary and mounted the gun directors, Bridge and life support. The bulk of the 700 crew lived in the pencil section with the guns and over-crowding was chronic. But despite the innovations the ship was really nothing more than a mobile gun battery with little manourverability. Curtailing the cruiser building programs to concentrate on more and more City Battleships Terra entrenched itself into "Fortress Earth" philosophy. Although the Type 2 ships which followed addressed a lot of the issues, in particular the over crowding that, along with boredom, plagued the ships with demoralisation leading to sabotage and even mutiny, they were never used as designed and post war the Type 2 ships were officially relegated to forts and the Type 1's converted to prison hulks for those awaiting transport to the penal colonies. An ironic twist was the first inhabitants were mainly ex crews of the same ships, condemned in the post war purge.
