Description
My previous series illustrated landing on the moon and return to orbit of the Russian 1960s secret manned lunar program. This new series depicts the arrival of the spacecraft at the moon.
The Blok D adapter, rigidly attached to the bottom of the Soyuz 7K-LOK, transferred the booster thrust to the orbiter spacecraft at the top of the stack. The LK lander was not attached to the adapter but fastened to a different thrust ring, a similar arrangement to that used on Apollo. However after, the Apollo CSM, separated from the adapter and docked with the Lunar Module, the lander crew transferred to the LM through an internal hatch. The Russian spacecraft had no such hatch so the cosmonaut had to spacewalk to the LK. For safety reasons, this had to be done before the adapter was jettisoned when the two spacecraft would become essentially free-flying. Although not visible in the few photos I've seen there must have been a panel in the adapter providing the cosmonaut access to the LK cabin hatch. Artwork by Serge Gracieux appears to show the cosmonaut releasing such a panel, so I originally added a handle and release mechanism. Considering the difficulty exerting force in zero-G and the danger of a free-floating piece of metal, I decided a more likely approach would be to jettison the panel before the EVA. This image depicts that event.
The LOK is the Soyuz 7K and the Blok D/Adapter are (or shortly will be) from Renderosity Free Stuff. The moon is a NASA photo. The star background is from DAZ's Easy Environments: Earth.
The scene was composed and rendered in Poser 11 and composited in Corel Photo Paint.
