At the outbreak of the Plutorian Revolution the World Council outraged the stellar colonies by withdrawing all major units to the Home system. The colonies on the Centauri Worlds lobbied relentlessly and eventually won the concession to build five City Class Battleships (Type 1) for their own defence. The Council only gave in after receiving a report that the Colonial yards had no chance of building the complex hulls in a realistic time frame. When former Captain of the Home Fleet Richard Conrad was appointed Admiral of the Colonial Space Force he inherited the hopelessly stalled City Class Project. Re-branding them as Battlecruisers allowed him to make drastic changes to the design, scrapping the complex hull for pre-fabricated mining ship hulls. The loss of the rolling broadside was compensated for by fitting a staggering 656 guns per ship with Nitrogen purging to give an unprecedented rate of fire. Fission boosters were doubled up and four slow burn Fusion Engines provided FTL capability, later vastly enhanced with the Sphylight star drive. Hanger decks allowed the Battlecruisers to dock their own escort group, the ships were designed to be able to operate a five year cruise independent of support, the time taken to patrol all the Stellar Colonies, the Colonial Space Force earned it's nickname "Patrol" from that practise. Creative accounting, subterfuge and outright lies kept the scale of the upgrade from the Council until it was too late and the Colonies had a fleet that outgunned the Home Fleet in pure Mega-tons per second fire power. Pictured as built with six rail guns for bombarding planetary bodies, later removed as part of the post war treaty that allowed the continuing existence of the Patrol and it's super ships.
