Elle était devenue chasseresse par nécessité, non par goût, la cartouchière lui sciait les reins et le fusil faisait son poids au bout de ses longues randonnées journalières. L’air était pestilentiel et la moindre chose qui se mange, attirait ces maudits oiseaux en maraude. Il n’y avait pas d’or à défendre en ces terres de plus en plus dévastées, du moins pas au sens du métal. « S’ils savaient !», se dit-elle en lâchant un instant le canon de son fusil, pour effleurer les gerbes de fleurs jaunes qui s’obstinaient à pousser. « L’avenir, c’est vous ! » Elle vérifia, une dernière fois, que ses précieux sachets de graines étaient bien au sec dans sa sacoche, et elle se remit en route le plus furtivement possible.
