Description

Rhiannon is major figure in the Welsh legend, figuring prominently in the First and Thrid Branches of the Mabinogi, the earliest prose tales of Britain. She is an independent, intelligent, beautiful, woman of Annwfyn (the otherworld). She has three magical birds, the Adar Rhiannon, who’s song can "wake the dead and lull the living to sleep". She first appears clad in gold brocade astride a shining white horse to Pwyll prince of Dyfed, her future consort, and is strongly associated with horses. Some scholars consider her related to the Gaulish horse-goddess Epona, and she and her son Pryderi are sometimes depicted as mare and foal.
