Description

Ok...several of you said you wanted to see more, so here's more from my folk collection at home (fuller zoomed): The top two are Mexican "Calaveras"---decorated skulls. Ceramic. In Mexico, they paint beautiful patterns on ceramic skulls: They're each a deep, affirming "NO" to death (fitting for this time), and to celebrate life. They're also a way of celebrating our ancestors... (They also make sugar calaveras---which you eat. Other calaveras have gold leaf, jewels, or silver...) The Bottom image is a tribal Elder, designed to protect his people. He's got a crown w/ earring-like pendants streaming down; and if you zoom you'll see the interweaving colors. Fabric on metal. (He's large too.) Thanks so much for your very enthusiastic responses. Two more left... ------------------

The Calaveras are mesmerizing, love the texture with the hollow petals and center in the big flowers

these are so cool, wonder how long it takes to paint one with lots of patterns and colors. that stitched one is nicely created. super capture mark. zoomed is best.

Outstanding capture of these beautifully articulated skulls, the top two strongly resembling helmets from this angle. Incidentally, we have a Calaveras County, a largely rural county, here in east central California, made famous by Mark Twain. The bottom item, also beautifully photographed, reminds me of the masks worn by shamans in Asia and North America.

Oh, those Calaveras are just off-the-map cool, and so colorful! I love the idea that they don't represent death, rather the affirmation of life! And they are so happy and colorful. And that mask is a wonderful piece of art as well. I've always been fascinated at how colorful much of Mexican folk art is.

You must have quite the collection, Mark!

Beautiful colors in all of these. The skulls are wonderful, I really like the cut-outs; it makes them seem fragile and that's also very fitting, I suppose.

The Elder mask it fabulous. I like the balance... one side reminds me of the colors of the warm daylight and the other the colors of cool night. His headdress with all those tiny French Knots, wow! And again the sun/moon rising in an arc.

A wonderful, colorful collection!

A very interesting collection, I see something that is also reflected in your art.

These are such beautiful examples of indigenous craft work. Those sugar calaveras filled the panaderia windows during the dia de los muertos week...pure sugar which tended to melt in the heat :) The lower mask is exquisite...

Love all three, but I think I love the last one the most. Must have been a huge work to make it :)

These are gorgeous. I especially like the blue and white one. So great to decorate skulls in such a beautiful life-affirming way. My assistant has skull of a deer that he had beaded by a Native American artist. The entire skull is covered in colorful beads.
