Description

OK think I have figured out how Normal maps are different from Bump maps. It's a bit like the difference between bump and displacement maps in poser--the Normal map displaces the mesh way more than the bump map does, so if you overdo it you can get the same kinds of goofy errors that rogue displacement maps give you in Poser. My first attempt here gave the swimsuit checky boobs! Once I turned the Normal map down, it looked better. I am not sure I am pro Normal maps--they take up a ton of space and memory, but they can do neat things on a small scale, like chain mail and dragon scales. Anyway, this image uses for light and the background another Dthuregrif HDRI instead of the default Ruins--this one is "Maui A". It looks like DTG studios is now at just Renderosity-- so if you see more HDRI for sale here, grab 'em. :D

Ah, yes. normal maps do the same kind of thing bump maps do, but different. A bump map gives the illusion that the surface normal is displaced vertically...a bump. A normal map will tilt the normal to give it slope, so the bumps look more detailed and realistic.

Looks really good, Lynn! Both suit and girl! LOL

They are tricky to get right...I don't have a good understanding how it uses the color info yet!
