Description

It is the night of Saturday 9 April (or 26 March) of 1300, around four in the morning. At the beginning of Canto XII Dante meets the Minotaur and places him to guard the VII Circle of Hell where the violent are punished. .. .. Pàrtiti, beast, because these are not veins taught by your sister, but I went to see your pains ... " ... and between the foot of the river and it, in trace corrien centauri, armed with thunderbolts, like solien in the world go hunting ... I saw people under the edge; and the great centaur said, "They are tyrants that I will die in my blood and take it ...

Stunning image, Dante would be proud. I have always loved Dante's Inferno. Great job bringing the 7th circle to life.

Being critical, I think we all look for an imperfection in anything we view. In this instance, it is absolutely superb! Very fine art indeed!

Wonderful, Giuliano. I remember (from my old, old school-class notes) that Canto XII was a powerful introduction to the seventh circle...with amazing imagery. Your minotaur is perfect: He's a vicious, raging golden monster---I love that you cast him in decaying gold, with all kinds of rips and fissures in his skin. And he is raging (l’infamïa di Creti) just as he is in the Canto (at the very moment he sees Virgil, thinking Virgil is Theseus, who murdered him...). You have him dancing and roaring, his arms waving and threatening: But he stays "in place": He won't attack. Thus, Dante and Virgil can pass...

Once again, you've transformed hell into beautiful abstract images. Actually, they're not "abstract": They're very real objects. The blood and flames are now sheets of exquisite, transparent silk and gauze. (You've turned the boiling river into sheets of fiery gauze.) The actual flames, themselves, are little tufts of fire, popping up like flowers or dandelions. And the souls of the VIIth Circle are made of tormented metal, as if someone pounded them with a chisel and hammer...they're tortured iron. And they're wrestling with each other, to escape. You even have one human crawling into the flames/blood: These people are running in every direction...some of them actually hug each other. And your foreground has skulls of a human, a ram, and (I think) a neanderthal creature. (He has a horn.) The "floor" is a dark bubbling hard-clay...maybe it's a cobblestone street that leads to the dreaded boiling river.

Dante's descriptions just seethe, and they also tear at our hearts (le lagrime, che col bollor diserra,/a Rinier da Corneto, a Rinier Pazzo...or, of Prince Henry's murder, Colui fesse in grembo a Dio/lo cor che ’n su Tamisi ancor si cola, and so on)...they stab and jab the reader. ("Blood up to the throats," or even the river boiling the feet---I think that's in Canto XII.) Yet you transform these harrowing details into both horror and beauty: You've turned hell into a dazzling pageant of sheaths and gold mountains and exquisite dark skies and humans made of forged metal...your images seethe (just as Dante's verse seethes), but they're also dazzling. As I said in some other comment, you capture Hell and the dazzling music of Dante's verse. This image is like a dance in hell...Another brilliant interpretation from you.
