Description

Given that I already created a traveller for my render of Ozymandias, is seemed fitting that he get his own story.... Shams al-Dīn Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf al-Lawātī al-Ṭanji is better known by the mercifully much shorter name of Ibn Battuta. Ibn Battuta was a 14th century Berber scholar and explorer who travelled the world over a period of thirty years, visiting most most of North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, India and China. He remains the most widely travelled explorer, covering 117,000 km in his lifetime; nearly 10 times what Marco Polo managed. The pace of his travels suggests he must have passed through some areas quite quickly - he described the great Pyramids of Egypt as conical solid stone structures, so he couldn't have seen them from that close! His journeys are recounted in a book he dictated near the end of his life, "A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Traveling".

nice if you can afford it, which obviously he could; in Japan it is always said the thrid generation tends to 'fritter away' what has been earned over the years, good for him at least he recorded it all :) lovely illustration and background scene to go with the veery interesting tale

Thanks Paul, the background is the ancient city of Mardin in Turkey, near the Syrian border. The towers would have been a couple of centuries old already by the time Ibn Battuta got there.
