Description
The interesting exchange with Madbat yesterday about digital vs hand crafted and just seeing Sunbeam's ArtBreeder work, got me thinking as to how far can you take the 500 x 500 pixel returns from ArtBreeder.
I know mermaid has done some outstanding character portraits with AB, so for fun and 30 mins, I thought I'd see what I could produce taking a little 500 pixel-sized image from AB and putting it though FilterForge filters, Charcoal, Pencil Draw and Pencil; blendeding in Pixelmator Pro, blowing up to 3000 x 3669 and applying a vibrance filter in FF to finish.
It is worth a look at full size to appreciate and criticise the results. I'd print it out if a printer existed within 100Km but one doesn't :(
Upside is it took 30 mins to produce and little effort.
Downside is you can't rotate the image to a more interesting angle or tweak the expression as you would in Poser or Daz or by hand.
AI is all singing and dancing we are told, but the limits strike me as obvious and slightly frustrating unless of course the AI is designed to work in a virtual passport office.
Barnes Wallis of bouncing bombs and dam buster fame, produced a drill guided by returned light from a subject to create carvings, particularly a very good one of his wife. You would think AI could take an image and in the same way generate a 3D version of a 2D image and so allow for a truly interesting experience....

You can turn a 2d image into 3D....kinda. But not very well. The only thing like that I've seen is using LIDA to scan areas and ever neighborhoods to turn into 3D scenes. A lot of the game The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter was made with that fancy stuff. We still can't output a Bob Ross painting though. The thing with computer generated painting and drawing, is it emulates brush, pencil, and pen strokes too perfectly. the attempts to produce scetchiness are too mathematical If you grew up and practiced on the real thing, it takes you into uncanny valley territory. It's better when CG is allowed to look like CG. You can get some very pleasing looks and do some things a lot easier, and a lot more consistent. This is good if you are doing a series of paintings, or a comic, or illustrated story. Plus, with CG you can backstep. You can't do that with a poster sized pen and ink illustration when your pen decides to blot. Each has it's good points and it's drawbacks. BUT I will always advocate learning to draw the old fashioned way if you are serious about arting. It teaches you a lot about form positive and negative space, patience and makes you really focus on doing it right, OR ELSE. Even with a pencil, you only get so many backsteps with an eraser before your paper is wrecked and smudged. You need to really think about the lines and color you are putting down, because there is no delete.
Sorry 'bout the mini-rant. I'd like to point out a program be Topazlabs called Gigapixel. It resizes images bigger very well. I used it on my last post because it was too small for rendo. I doubled it with no tribbles.

Thanks for taking the time out to put all that down M, it is very interesting, particularly the point that CG should look like CG which never crossed my mind as an approach, but makes sense. I've seen some models in the Zbrush gallery that almost manage to cross the uncanny valley, but it is perhaps harder with still images where the eye can linger and try to pick out faults than with film where it is moving and the eye has been deceived. Will take a look at Topazlabs and Gigapixel. Cheers, Paul

Lovely image and interesting effect.
I tend to agree with much of what Madbat said, I prefer things to look like what they are, and I like that this is still obviously a CG image (the apparent crosshatching in areas like the hair would be impossible with a pencil!). If the aim is to mimic painting and drawing, then overlaying some actual digital pencil or brush strokes manually could make a big difference (and back to Madbat's point about draughtsmanship)...

Interesting and excellent end result I think the end results what matters doesn't really matter what was used to get there as long as your happy with the results and had fun getting there.
