Description

The leader of the "Knights of the Quartz Rose." Her given name is Winifred Jennifer Collins. She prefers to go by "Fred." Growing up she had way too many people calling her "Winnie" and more than enough bear jokes to go with it. She's a more personal character for me. A tribute to a friend I lost a long time ago. While I should note that I made no attempt to model Fred after this friend in looks, much of the personality and other little tidbits shine through. I think my friend would have liked Fred. I only wish she could see her. It didn't even click that I was making a tribute until I added the scar. It just sorta happened, I clicked the button and the LIE loaded and all these memories came flooding back. My friend had open heart surgery at 14. She liked to wear low-necked shirts to display the scar. We hung out at lunch, and chattered in science class. One of the very few people I ever felt comfortable around. She was surprised when after three weeks I still hadn't noticed the prominent scar. I was raised to be a gentlemen, and never let my eyes go down that far. She was rather flippant about the whole thing. One day, she wasn't there. After a few more days, I asked the teacher if she was alright, should I copy my notes, etc. It was then I learned that she took her own life. I didn't know her long enough. She was bright, and funny, and beautifully ALIVE. And I still miss her, 17 years later. Winifred is a little detached from life. Long illness and being a bit too tall, a bit to square-faced, a bit too flat-chested created a number of problems for her growing up, leaving her the perpetual outcast. She met Lola while they were both members of a different guild in their favorite game. That guild crumpled after a lot of the typical mean-jerk-online shenanigans. People being bullies, and nobody honoring basic human decency. Lola, who was still suffering her own real world nightmares at the time, stuck with Realm_Lord. Eventually they formed "The Knights of the Quartz Rose." This would become a respected haven for outcasts, where Realm_Lord is always there with a kind word a fierce protection against the trolls that lurk online. It's a small community, but it has become the family that Fred never really had. While I dislike labels, for those wondering, Fred would be classes as "asexual." In the story she doesn't experience romantic feelings for anyone. Instead, she feels a great admiration for Lola, and is in awe of Lenny. She also holds up "Milk Mage" (another character) as being a prime example of what a woman should be. Though she might have built up that pedestal just a little too high... Online, she is very confident and commanding. Much more comfortable wearing an avatar than her own skin. In the real world, she is timid and shy. Almost a Clark Kent/Superman-type transformation. As I start to get into the second book of the series, we'll be learning more about Fred. I'm looking forward to writing it. I just got to get through editing the current volume first. There's a lot going on in this scene. The set is "1920s Teenager's Bedroom." It suits the more androgynous Fred nicely. Computer came from the DUCC set. (Deep Underground Command Center.) Camera angle was chosen partly so I wouldn't have to add too much to the decor, and partly because I like it. Also, then I didn't need to load any pants! Lighting is modified from a single drop light from the set, and the glow of the monitor. The hair is "Elven Hair for Genesis 3 Male." The eyebrows came from "Devansh for Sanjay 8." The model started as Jax for Eva 8, but I spent some time working on the face and body proportions to dial it into what was in my mind. Here she's wearing Exnem's "Man Shirt for Genesis 8 Female." The goal was to have a character that looked natural in whatever clothing I chose to put her in, without having strong features either way. I think I managed it. I'll let my peers be the judge. I'll be jumping on a Twitch steam in a few moments. If you're interested, here's the link: https://www.twitch.tv/lylearyn

Nice work, the background story is rather touching too. Lost far too many friends myself (it happens as you get older, a sad fact of life), and those things never leave you. The sign of a true artist is being able to express those things in one form or another, piecemeal or as a whole, and to leave the viewer /reader/ listener moved, and possibly reminiscing on similar experience.

You've done that here. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you reading having a look, and reading. This one made me more emotional then I was really prepared for today, but I'm glad I got it done. And I can't wait to illustrate her first irl interaction with Lola.

Ok, I realize that maybe you were asking what her current character is. She plays a big beefy tank. Currently cross-playing, but she'll be putting in for a character change token to stand in solidarity with the other girls, since everybody is using female avatars. When she got started she wanted to look big and strong, so she went with a big beefy half-giant. She realizes that a big beefy half-giant lady works too, and decides to change. I figure the game doesn't charge a premium for a gender change token, but she's kinda leaving it for a surprise later on. I'm actually looking forward to writing that scene. Basically, after meeting all of them in person, she feels like she can be a lady in game and still be a badass.

Of course, I still have to design the new avatar. That should be fun!

Thanks for having a look. I really appreciate it.

Fred reminds me of a friend that committed suicide a few years ago. You never really forget them. I feel like I missed the grab.

Annnd, I missed your stream but I did give you a follow.

Thanks. It's a gut punch that resurfaces when you aren't expecting it.

I'll be on again. Last stream, the first half was silent because my microphone was disabled. Whoops!

A lose like that never stops hurting but the love is never gone either. All in all, a deal I would take knowing all going in. Your story and your character are touching. You feel this one and much as you see it. That's art.

Thank you. Dag. I like to think she knows that she meant something to me. That she's missed. If someone being abused commits suicide, I believe the abuser should be charged with murder. Period.

Thanks! I like doing these. I've done one of Lola, and Lenny (which I haven't even shared yet!) and not Realm_Lord/Fred. Might just have to do the whole guild just for fun. Use a different color every time. Hmm.

Thanks, Stevie. It means a lot to me, so I'm glad folks have responded so positively. I mean, I know this is a good group, but sharing still makes me nervous. This won't be the last time we see Fred, so I'm glad she's come to symbolize, at least in part, my friend.

Such a great image, Lyle, very nostalgic to me as a former gamer, and then I read your story. What an awesome tribute. And to do it with an image of something that so many of us can identify with almost makes it even that much more meaningful. ie/ This was her "in life." Just simple. Beautiful work. :)

Thank you. It's very touching. She always made me feel like a decent human being, and we'd laugh at silly things. We liked to "argue," That is we'd find very silly things to take opposing views of. I think that's partly why we got along. We were both dealing with depression, and we both wanted the other to laugh. And we both understood that we were both depressed. There was no need to hide.

Great job on her, good sir. The lighting is perfect, and this image really communicates her comfort and confidence in her virtual world.

I can empathize with her - I was always the skinny, timid kid (when I was a LOT younger) that the schoolyard bullies loved to pick on - until that day they pushed one time too many. There were a couple bloody noses that day - and mine wasn't one of them.

LyleAryn

6:27PM | Sat, 29 August 2020

I can imagine. There's going to be that kind of thing happen in the series. Not perfectly clear on the details. She'll be with her 'mates in real life, and somebody outside the group will try and start something. That's about as clear as I got so far, except I know she's going to be Realm_Lord in person when it happens, and not just timid Fred.
