J’aime étudier régulièrement la fonction métalinguistique : cette capacité qu’a le langage à réfléchir sur sa construction même. Cela existe aussi pour les images, quand leur figuration échappe à la narration. Ici, nous ne saurons jamais quel mauvais chemin a pris cet homme, car le paysage du côté de son regard renvoie plus à l’inscription de l’image sur son support (évoquant ici la gravure sur papier) qu’à sa présence dans l’environnement sombre suggéré à droite de l’image. Il ne faudrait pas confondre la simplicité du procédé (un masque de fusion en dégradé entre deux couches d’images, par exemple) avec la complexité du concept : le regard du personnage tourné vers le changement d’état de son apparition, ne nous dit pas tant sa désorientation géographique (où vais-je ?) que son interrogation existentielle (d’où viens-je ?). Comme si tout personnage de papier avait lui-aussi la légitimité de s’interroger sur le sens de son mode d’apparition à notre regard (là est le métalangage) ; c’est d’autant plus troublant que cette recherche des origines de l’attachement à une matrice est faussée : ce personnage n’a aucune fondation dans les strates du papier puisqu’il est numérique. Pourtant, ce moment suspendu gagne en humanité, du fait qu’il est porté par un modèle photographié, qui permet notre identification, même distanciée. Ce moment devient alors le nôtre, car notre vie spirituelle a aussi cette capacité métalinguistique à nous faire marquer un temps d’arrêt dans nos actions, pour interroger le sens que nous donnons à notre vie.
