Description

Liberty - Here she stands with the Sword of Justice in one hand - ready to defend truth and virtue. In the other hand, the Balance of Justice - ready to weight justice and mercy. This is a digital painting. Further explanation - I titled this "Liberty", and not "Lady Justice", "Justice" or "Blind Justice" because of the cliche of Lady Justice being blindfolded weighting Justice and Mercy, and because Liberty requires 3 aspects. Those three aspects are: 1) The Law - nothing exists without law. Where there is no law given, there can be no justice, and where there can be no justice, there is no mercy or liberty - only chaos. Laws are based off truths and virtues. Hence, the two edges of her sword. 2) Defense - When a law is given, it must be defended. Laws are based off virtues and are defended on the grounds of truth. 3) Justice - Justice is the interpretation of the law and is met through either mercy or punishment. We normally view "justice" as strictly punishment. However, without mercy, justice and be a cruel thing sometimes. I choose not to paint "Liberty" as you see the Statue of Liberty. Not just to avoid the cliche, but as stated above - law, defense and justice were to be symbolized. While I haven't yet symbolized the law in this painting, I plan to go back at a later time and add something symbolizing the Law. At that time, I might also add the proverbial blindfold, but she will not be wearing it. She won't be wearing it because she only blindfolds herself when hearing cases of justice so she is not blinded by personal prejudices. However, she needs to be unblindfolded when she is defending the law. She's standing ready to defend (sword in the air, and not by her side) as we're living in a time when people are ignoring the law. With the scales lowered and by her side, she stands ready, once the law has been enforced, to resume her role as judge. When complete, the painting will be a representation of the three branches of the Republic of the United States - Executive (the law enforcer), Judicial (the interpreter of the law), and Legislative (the giver of the law).

Lady Liberty only wears a blindfold when she's weighing out justice. In this painting she's prepared to defend truth and virtue for which she needs to see what she's doing.

I thought of placing a scarft (blindfold) around her neck but got tired of painting. 😉
