Description

The "Lady of Shalott" is one of Tennyson's great poems, and tells the story of a mysterious young woman who lives on an island in the river near Camelot. She is doomed never to be able to look at the world directly, only seeing the comings and goings from the court of King Arthur in her mirror. At first she is content on her island, but grows increasingly dissatisfied . One day, Lancelot passes by and she is unable to resist looking at him out of the window, and brings the curse down on herself, sealing her tragic fate, but that,s for subsequent illustrations... "But in her web she still delights To weave the mirror's magic sights, For often thro' the silent nights A funeral, with plumes and lights And music, came from Camelot: Or when the moon was overhead Came two young lovers lately wed; 'I am half sick of shadows,' said The Lady of Shalott. " She has been the subject of numerous paintings, notably a series by J.W.Waterhouse which have inspired this picture. V4 wearing a retextured version of the "Princess Alex" dress and Elleth hair, from DAZ.

This is a fantastic depiction, Joe, a truly beautiful work. The shadows (see what I did there) are wonderful here -- the window patterns falling across her body and reinforcing how she will never be able to truly experience anything but that which passes her by. :)

Though I suspect that this may not your cup of tea exactly I would recommend The Lady Of Shalott sung by Loreena McKennit to go with this.

Thanks for that, a good listen (Though ironically she omits the verse of which this is an illustration!)

Nicely done. It's nice when a work of literature inspires the visual arts.
