Description

___ The Autumn season has just started, yet I felt like remembering the unforgettable sight I had of the Jungfrau last Summer, seen from the edge of the opposite steep and vertical slope overlooking the village of Lauterbrunnen further down in the valley,in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. From there, the Jungfrau,'the maiden', in German, 4,158 meters (13,642 ft), looks more like a queen in her majesty than like a young girl ! The title 'La Reine des Neiges' ( French for 'the Queen of Snow' ) is actually reminiscent for many French people of the American 2013 blockbuster 'Frozen' which was renamed this way 'La Reine des Neiges' here in France.
___ The Jungfrau was climbed via the west side for the first time in 1885 by 5 Swiss mountaineers, all from the neighbouring village of Wengen, but through its most difficult access to the northeast ridge, only in 1911. The southside of the mountain (here we are looking at the northside) overlooks and gives instant and rapid access to the largest European glacier, the Great Aletsch glacier, 23km long (about 14 miles) , 940 meters (over 3,000 ft) of ice thickness under your feet!, at an elevation of over 4,000 meters at its highest ...
___ I am a very modest amateur hiker and mountaineer myself, still I sort of 'climbed up' almost to the top of the Jungfrau at 3.454 meters high, in full view of the summit and of the Aletsch glacier, thanks to the highest European and Swiss railway ever built straight through the rocky bulk of the mountain. An unforgettable, invaluable and quite affordable trip that will turn you, whoever you are, into an alpinist in the safest conditions ever, this is Switzerland!
___ Last but not least, to the very left of my photo, you can see a small grey rocky summit on the crest of the mountain, it is actually the Sphinx Observatory, an astronomical observatory which is one of the highest observatories in the world. Accessible to the public, it has been tunneled to fit an elevator which ascends to the observatory from the Jungfraujoch railway station, the highest such train station in Europe.
____Thank you so much for your nice appreciation on my previous Oeschinensee photo, have a nice forthcoming weekend and stay safe...

A beautiful shot. The snow as the backdrop of the still-green trees in front is a masterful set-up. What a stunning mountain, congratulations for climbing it. Thanks for the info, too.

(Soupirs !) (rires !)
