This feels like it has some inspiration from impressionists, including Van Gogh and whatnot. I don't think I have ever seen that sort of thing attempted without color, and the result is interesting. There is a great feeling of movement, and for some reason I get the impression they are smoking.
Nice idea!

re tuerda's comment, I like it very much, and the human forms remind me of cezanne more than of monet or renoir. But the relaxed seating does bring renoir to mind (in those paris cafe scenes---there's also a big painting of people seated at a table right here in Chicago). If this were van Gogh, the lines would be more squiggled and then broken into pulses...in any case I love the comment. This is so mysterious, because this is such a gathering, but the space around it is totally bare. And you have intense pencil and then very light pencil, alternately (in the characters). Again, postures that seem involved, but in what, we don't know. That post roots it in a surrounding, and you have darker people on one half, and lighter on the other. (ie: balance) Another of your rich portraits which remain intact and unexplained, giving us the feeling that we've happened upon a moment which remains private but very clear and potent to the people in the drawing. I love your drawings from this period, they have so much mystery and power at the same time.
I have to stop now, I've been commenting on your images 50 minutes and I need to sleep, lol. If I concentrated on lots of portraits, it's because I haven't been able to comment on so many of them in one sitting before. They are so rich and strange and mystical. If I can get to more of your work before I step away again, I'll certainly try. I hope you and your loved ones are well in this difficult year, and thank you for your considerate and thoughtful comments in my gallery. Take good care.
