Description

This arose as a suggestion by Rtesian to update an old DS3 scene of mine to DS4/Iray. You can see the original in my gallery (close to the beginning; its about 5 years old). I know Rtesian is no longer in this community, but he inspired this so I dedicate it to him anyway! It was an interesting exercise; some things work better (fabric shaders, emissives), some less well (harder to get those really deep shadows). While generally the textures are superior in iray, I like the predictability of lighting 3dlight; you don't get unexpected ambient fill... anyhow, here's the result..

I think it's beautiful and very successful 🌺 I never managed to work with 3delight, for me Iray was a blessing, I could immediately make scenes that I couldn't get out with 3delight, maybe because of my equipment, I don't know. I went to see the 3delight version My eyes prefer Iray

Thanks Mo. You're tight the iray version is more naturalistic, but certain effects (like the glowing gem on the staff) simply don't work so its a bit of give and take...

Though I agree that both versions have their merits, what you get in in Iray also depends on what you put into it (emissive effect).

BUT I you do like to postwork your stuff, have a look at Piximperfect's trick to add shine to jewelery, which works a treat in illuminating gems, eyes and flames (just goggle Piximperfext and shine, should the link disappear magically, again: www_youtube_com/watch?v=4Y96iRJ5DS0)

Thanks RRun, I'll check that out, What I struggled with most was to get the glowing gem in the staff. The original was done with a glass object and a very small point light; I spent hours playing with emissives but couldn't recreate the effect. The emissives of the lightning ball and candle flames however work very nicely... well, the learning curve never ends :)

I think it looks great. I will admit I have been know to make one version of each over lapping one with 30-60 % transparency to try and get the best of both worlds. It is time taking but sometimes worth the effort. Hope I made since lol. Long story short awesome work !

A very beautiful scene that reminds me of an 'ancient' video game called 'Zork Nemesis', full of symbols related to medieval alchemy...Well done ! 🤴👍
