Description
We are off to a brand new year my friends! So, this is the first oil painting that I've finished this year. The funny thing about this painting is; as I was painting the rock formations, It sort-of reminded me of that old classic cartoon series called “The Flintstone's” LOL! :-) No, I wasn't trying to paint it that way, but, the craggly look of the rocks just gave me that feel for some reason. So, I named it “Bedrock” in honor of the old classic Hanna Barbera cartoon series that I'd watched as re-run's as a kid back in the 70's. Being, it gave me so much fun times as a kid. Seriously though, I think it turned out relatively nice, but, you'll let me know, I'm sure. Also, as to the kind of clouds I've painted; this cloud formation style is called “Cumulus Clouds”. FYI: Did you know that there's different names for the different kinds of cloud formations, or shapes? You can look them up, it's really kind of cool... And, I wanted to try to be somewhat realistic, as far as the lighting detail on the clouds. So, I used different types of brushes to paint them, and give the clouds a more realistic look... I wanted to be sure that there was also stronger light, or highlight on some of the clouds too, just as it would be naturally accruing in nature. And, I also put quite a bit of time on the waterfall and rocks too, as the melted snow is cascading down, over the rocks. This was truly a fun painting to paint! I do hope that it shows my love of nature. You have a wonderful day! ♥ Hand painted in oils, on an 18” x 24” inch stretched canvas... Created by Artist Dan Seitzinger – www.danseitzinger.com

I like that you are trying to show the effect of light. I can see it is something you are still figuring out, and I have at least one important tip in this regard: Light only really works if there is also there is also shadow. Without something to create contrast for the light, the light will not show.
I can see you have made some efforts to add shadow (for instance, the left half of the tree on the left side of the foreground), but you seem fearful of really getting the dark values in there: You needed to make it darker so that the lighter side shows up. A few places really stand out to me, one of them is the bunch of small trees immediately to the right of this one. The trunks of these trees are desaturated (which is good) but not nearly dark enough, and the space between these trunks needs to be even darker still. Note that with the shadows from the leaves and the trunks, almost no light should be able to show on the rock behind: It should be almost completely black.
The rays of light from the upper right are very nice, and the clouds look awesome. Keep it up!
