Description
The main antagonist in the Kalevala is Louhi, shapeshifting witch and queen of the northern land of Pohjola. While not out and out evil, she is definitely a schemer and often at odds with the heroes Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen and Lemminkäinen 19th and 20th Century depictions of her often show her as a hag; given that she was the mother of several exceptionally beautiful daughters (who at various points in the tale are object of the affections of one or another of the heroes), it seems unlikely...
