Description

Nothing artistic here.... Just the main reason I've not been around much the last few days. Just took this photo a few minutes ago. This is the current ambient temperature in my studio here in the basement. This basement has always been somewhat uncomfortable during the winter, but for some reason this winter is the worst ever. Another big reason we want to find another place to live - with room for the studio UPSTAIRS. I've tried those little portable room heaters - totally ineffective. All they seem to do is pop circuit breakers.. The problem, of course is it's the basement. Warm air rises, and cold air is heavier and descends. And of course the basement is the lowest part of the house. I added a second furnace vent back in 2017 while refinishing after the flood. But it doesn't help much - if at all. I know 50 degrees doesn't seem all that cold, but... I'm sitting here wearing warm-ups, a heavy sweatshirt, thick socks, and a fairly heavy robe. And I'm still freezing. My hands are pretty much numb at the moment. Anyway, enough of my whining... I'm still working on things on the laptop upstairs, but I do have to come down here for the Photoshop machine, and a few other things. So if my activity here is a bit spotty for the next week or so, that's why. Hope everyone's doing well, staying safe, healthy, and WARM! 😉

I do like it cool in my apartment, and when I moved in I turned off all the radiator heat valves...my mother was European and only had fireplaces and such for winter warmth. She kept our house in upstate NY in the mid to high 60s during the winter. But with all that being said, temps in the 50s in a house even for me is beyond the pale :) Get an electric blanket and wrap yourself in it while you are in the basement...drinking some hot liquids also can help...

Harsh environment makes for great art. The artist must suffer! .... or, you could get a space heater.

Tried that with several different ones.. This room is really too big for those to be very effective... All they seem to do is keep me up and moving when the trip the circuit breakers... LOL

Ah, yes..... An artist's life..... I still have both my ears, though..... 🤣

You have my sympathies. My basement is just as cold. I don't use my office down there because of it. Have you looked into a heated office chair? They're more for muscle stiffness, but maybe they'll work

That's a cold room, I'm sorry you're uncomfortable. Electric blanket? Hot water bottles? Finger-less gloves (so you can still work on the computers)? Hand warmers? I dislike the idea that people are cold, it makes me sad. I hope you find comfort, somehow.

I know what you mean. the floor plan of my house's master bedroom is always cold. when I have helped neighbors, I asked them if their master bedroom is cold during the winter and all agree. I think the outside wall has no insulation. I turn down the thermostat to 68 at night so the heater will not come on, but Thursday through Sunday you can bet it will be on. 15 F was in the forecast, but they raised it to mid 20's. Bodie will be sleeping in the laundry also!

That is way too cold for my tastes. As it is, I woke up this morning, 10 Feb, to 62F in my bedroom. 68F is about as cool as I want, but anything below that is too cold. Stay warm, if you can.

Sorry to hear, my friend... I hope you are able to stay focused on your art! I would try a space heater & a humidifier on a dedicated line, with nothing else plugged in. The electrical wiring in the wall are probably the older, 14 gauge, so the breaker is probably 15A to keep things safe. I imagine you have 20A line too for major appliances so that's the one you want to hook up your space heater too. Try some plastic film in windows too, it helps. Best Wishes!

I do not like the cold either. I had a situation like this one, been a while now, but I was in a basement and could not get warm. What I did was put a rug on the floor underneath my chair, basically in my work space. Than I made a frame around me, just sort of a screen, it can be made with blankets even but I just used old carboard. You need a top too, so do not forget that. basically you are boxing in your work space. Then your space heater has half a chance warming you up. It did pretty good for me. It was nothing fancy but it did the job.

That's pretty cold to be just sitting and trying to get some work done. No fun. Don't know your situation, but when we installed the recording studio we got an old cast iron water heater from the 40s 50s and looped the baseboard heating from the upstairs through it. Luckily it has a lever/valve to adjust the water flow. That iron beast could make the room unbearably hot if left running.

I love seeing what might be called "old technology". Your thermostat, I believe, dates from the late 50's to the early 60's. And of course, it uses the old "Fred" scale as we say in Canada. I take it that it was part of a larger device at one time, the thermostat now being the only part which functions reliably. It looks like I wouldn't be out of place on the dash of some classic era convertible.

Hmmm, 52F is about 11C. About the temp of a nice spring day. Though not a temp you could relax in your shorts. Though in Canada we would drive with our windows down on such a day.

They're starting "rolling power outages" here to help conserve power (so they say). Great... 🙄 It's not enough we have this damn pandemic to deal with...

That's cold. Minimum temperature in house is around 60°F (night) and 68°F when there's somebody home and most of the time higher. I was thinking about using my basement, but it's too damp in the summer and cold in the winter and too low all year round.

There is a nice waterfront 6 doors down from where we live. If moving to a state with no state income tax is on the table, I would be happy to see the place and send you video or even live stream it to you. Let me know, you have my number.
