Description

I've been finishing up the "Cool & Unusual Birds v1" update now that I have the final piece done, the Roadrunner. It's funny... that was one of the primary reasons for me creating that first digital lizard set. While in Arizona, I saw a roadrunner parading around the Saguaro National Park Visitor's Center with a lizard in its beak. Male roadrunners do this when courting a female. Suddenly, he ran up to a big plate glass glass very upset. He was challenging the "other" roadunner he saw in the window (his reflection). I knew from that point I had to have a western fence lizard model for my digital roadrunner! It took me 4 years to finally get around to making the lizard and then an additional 4 years to create an updated roadrunner worthy of that lizard model 😉 He seems at home in my Sagebush Habitat-- probably work equally as well with the Saguaro Habitat set too. The "Cool & Unusual v1" as well as 3-4 other set "free" updates will go live towards the end of April 2021 as part of my Audubon's Birthday celebration. The Greater Roadrunner is enigmatic terrestrial cuckoo of the American Southwest. An opportunistic predator, it feeds on snakes, lizards, spiders, scorpions, insects, birds, rodents, and bats, which it beats repeatedly against a hard substrate before consuming. While roadrunners are able to survive on the water content in it’s food, it will drink water if available. It uses salt glands in front of its eyes to excrete excess salt from its blood. It runs very quickly and will occasionally fly short distances. While the cartoon roadrunner is adept at getting away from Wyle E. Coyote, the real Greater Roadrunner can reach running speeds of 19 mph (30 kmh). To do so, it holds its head and tail flat and parallel to the ground. Greater Roadrunners are monogamous, maintain a long-term pair bond, and mutually defend a large, multipurpose territory. Each spring and summer, they renew their pair bond through a series of elaborate courtship displays in which the male bows and prances, wags his tail, and offers nesting material and food items to his attending mate.
