Description

Here's my updated Wryneck for SBRM European Edition2 in an Iray render. The update of the whole set should appear in late April. The moth in the background is the Spanish Moon moth from my Moths of the World v1. Wynecks (Jynx torquilla) are in woodpecker family though they do not have the characteristically long bills like woodpeckers do. These birds get their common name from their ability to turn their heads almost 180 degrees. When disturbed at the nest, they use this snake-like head twisting and hissing as a threat display. This odd behavior led to their association with witchcraft, hence to put a "jinx" on someone. They are seen in open forests, clearings, woodlands with low undergrowth, wooded pastures, and unimproved meadowlands with scattered trees, so long as they are dry and sunlit. They avoid damp vegetation and higher mountain areas. In non-breeding season, they are found in open dry woodlands, bushy grasslands and gardens. Wrynecks eat mostly ants, along with larvae and pupae. This species is a long distance migrant, and can cover a distance of 600 km (360 miles) in 8 days. The Eurasian Wryneck is red-listed (Endangered) in Britain by RSPB.
