Description
Dorothy watched as the surprising number of passengers whose destination was this seemingly unremarkable southern Kansas farming community disembarked from the coaches, looking for the Darlings. Finally, a portly gentleman wearing an overcoat, top hat and and striped trousers and spats stepped down onto the platform. Dorothy thought she recognized George Darling, who was several pounds heavier than when she had last seen him. He was followed by a dazzlingly beautiful young woman of 19 or 20 years with lush, red curls, dressed in a fashionable tweet jacket and skirt. Around her neck was a gold locket.
The woman turned toward her. “Dotty?” She set her suitcase down.
“Wendy?”
Despite themselves, the two young women ran toward each other and fell into an enthusiastic embrace. “Oh, Dotty,” said Wendy with a catch in her voice. “How wonderful to see you again!”
Dorothy backed up and regarded her friend. “Ain't you a looker! I'll bet you've been breakin' a few hearts!”
Wendy backed up and laughed a tinkling little laugh that made Dorothy think of silver Christmas bells. With her hands still on Dorothy's shoulders, she replied “And you have become quite the beauty yourself! Except that you dress like a peasant girl.”
“And you're still a prissypants,” Dorothy retorted – but with a playful grin.
