Description
Tan narrowed his eyes and glared at Jack. "Have I just been abducted by a pint-sized alien?"
Jack lowered his eyes guiltily. "I'm sorry, I'm in real trouble and need some help. I'll send you back if you want."
Hundreds, maybe thousands of Tan and Jacks stood at other lamp posts talking. None seemed aware of each other, or perhaps they were just ignoring each other. "You should have asked first. What is this place?" Tan asked with a frown.
"Infinity," replied Jack. "Those others of us are moments in the future as we're traveling through gates."
"A spaceship would have been less confusing," said Tan.
Jack looked up and gave Tan a weak smile. "We used spaceships a long time ago, but it takes too long to get anywhere."
Tan deepened his frown and looked down at Jack. "Well, a Gruggle doesn't cook itself, I'll help you, but no more surprises."
Jack's grin widened. "Deal."
"So, if you're innocent, you should turn yourself in to your world's police."
Jack shook his head quickly. "We don't have any police, we have the Gate Hunters, and they don't arrest you, they tear you apart."
Tan furrowed his brow. "Oh, come on now. I doubt an advanced species like yours would do that."
Jack turned his attention to the lamp post and studied the engravings. Each engraving indicated the worlds this gate was linked to. "My world has three sentient species, the Aeden, the Sherata, and the Dragons. The Sherata are the Gate Hunters, and they don't play around. Have you ever tried to talk with a tiger, it never works out."
Tan's eyes widened. "Tigers and Dragons?"
Jack nodded. "Yep, and they're just as smart as I am, and a lot bigger. We need to get away from the Gates for a while, I'm sure by now the Sherata are getting close. We need to travel the old fashion way for a bit. I know a Dragon that might give us a ride. He has an old spaceship."
Tan barely whispered through parted lips. "So much for no more surprises."

a scene filled with ominous warnings and a wonderful play with time---the way those other Jacks and Tans may be the main characters, only at different times (if I read you correctly). Love that image. And the visual suits it: I love the deep darkness, punctuated with people and lamps. (A really fine visual.) And the lamp---w/ the inscriptions---has the one bit of color in the image...I also like how Tan is ahead and looks back oh-so tenuously, like he knows this could lead to some bad endings. Fine job of setting up ominous expectations; and also your dialogue has your usual subtle humor.
