Description

A few years ago I uploaded a piece of art work I had done in pencil. I was just illustrating the point about where my artistic roots had come from. Everyone was very kind to me about it in their comments and several expressed an interest in seeing more of my work. I have decided to show you all where my art career ended as a very traditional, non-digital artist. I was working on this tribute to Hajime Sorayama when I put it away till later for a number of reasons. By the time I had gotten back to it, my life had taken a left turn, so to speak. I was now wearing glasses and my dexterity had deteriorated enough for me to know that I wasn't going to be able to finish it with the same quality that I had started on it. The image is done in colored pencil on a pure white, double thick piece of mattboard with a very smooth finish. The board is 25 inches x 19 inches. I left a little bit of carpet showing in the photo for your reference. I took the photo into PhotoShop and tried to color correct for the actual image and got it very close to the original but the white mattboard took a hit (LOL). Also, I left the final size of the photo as you see it here because it didn't come out as sharp as the original (sorry!) It has been basically 20 years since I last put a pencil mark on the image. . . I keep thinking that some day I might try to finish it, but. . . it ain't gonna happen (small sigh. . .) I am not angry about those events in my life which have brought me here. . . it is what it is. I should say that my digital art has been very rewarding and introduced me to a very diverse group of people that I probably would not have met in my other life, otherwise. Thank you all for being so kind and generous with your "looks" and "comments". Stay safe and stay healthy.

This is colored pencil???!!! I'm blown away, Dave! This is fantastic. I would have thought airbrush or digital at first look. Wow.

Yeah, this "aging" thing is not for the weak... Like you, I keep saying I'm gonna get my colored pencils back out ..... Someday. I still have a ton of them. Years ago, I was so fascinated by artists like Sorayama, Petty, and several others, I even played around with airbrushing for a few years. I never felt like my works were all that good, so I kinda gave it up when I began playing with CG, starting with earlier versions of Photoshop.

Still...... Maybe some day.... 😉

Fantastically beautiful and I feel your back story. Do not look back on the roads you didn't take. Look forward to the journey of the road you are on.

A excellent piece of crayon work, we were perhaps lucky to be around in the age of so many great graphic artists from Frazetta to Vallejo, and people like Romero did newspaper strips, and record sleeves were canvases; those were the days :)

Very fine work with immaculate attention to detail. I seriously thought at first that you used an airbrush.

I understand some artists like Gustave Moreau also left some of their pieces unfinished. Certainly I've got several unfinished pieces, too! Like you I keep telling myself I'll get around to completing them someday, but just feel... so sluggish...
