Description
The ancient mythical Welsh sword, which has played a central role in many legends through the centuries. The name was later corrupted by mediaval French authors into Calibor and Escalibor, from where its more commonly known name is derived.

Sort of, but not exactly... The Lady who bestows the sword is nameless in the earliest versions of the tale. Nimue (originally Niniane) is a separate character, the Lady of the Lake who raises Lancelot according to Chretien de Troyes. The two characters became conflated in later mediaeval re-tellings, as the story of Vivian/Nimue and Merlin evolved and by the time Mallory wrote Le Morte d'Arthur.
