You are right, good HDR images can do wonders, I agree with that and it makes lots of sense. Just try to illuminate a room through a 1 centimetre square hole and check what happens. I'm sure you will get the idea. Anyway "normal" lights will only provide you 256 sampling levels, I call them "wipe everything filter"...
