Description
The next day, as we entered the station, Roy groaned.
I glanced at him and where he was looking. Sitting, as if waiting to be helped, was Katrine. Although she still had most of her elven features, having brown hair and eyes and white skin rather than her natural charcoal-colored skin, white hair, and yellow eyes did a lot for hiding what she was.
“Has she’d been here a lot?” I asked.
“Almost every day. The other day, she somehow got lipstick and perfume on the Chief’s shirt. He didn’t know it until his wife saw it. We convinced her we’d arrested a hooker that made a fuss, and he’d had to restrain her.
“How did it get there? He’s not sleeping with her. Is he?”
“No. He was nowhere near her. No one here is stupid enough to sleep with her, not after what she did to Marcus.”
“Marcus slept with her?” I couldn’t believe that. He hated elves.
“No, but apparently you told her he was eyeing her.”
“He was. It wasn’t in a positive way, more like I wish I had laser vision so I could destroy you on sight kind of way. What’s did she do to him?”
“She handcuffed him to a pipe in the back of the evidence room and took his phone.”
“That’s all?” I expected more from an Unseelie.
“She also sent half-naked selfies of herself to every one of his contacts. He had a hard time explaining that to his mother, not to mention the three women he was dating.”
“Three?” I was impressed.
“Yeah, I thought you were bad. Since then, she’s been hanging around causing trouble.”
“I’ll talk to her.”
I sat in the chair next to hers. “Hi,” I said in Elvish.
“You lied to me.” She used Elvish too.
“I can’t lie. I’m an elf.”
“You told me Marcus was interested in me.”
“No. I said he was eyeing you. If looks could kill… He doesn’t like elves.”
“Yeah, I found that out.”
“What are you doing here? You aren’t coming to play pranks, are you?”
“No. I want to make sure Antonio is found guilty.”
Antonio had been a member of our chat group, named Specter. He used Kat’s interest in Morisis to meet up with her and then kidnapped her. He held her prisoner for several days before she was found.
“His trial won’t be for some time. Locking someone from forensics in the evidence room isn’t going to help. It may hinder the case. It may hurt all the cases that have evidence in there.”
Kat raised an eyebrow. “How?”
“They could claim you had access and could have tampered with any of it.”
“I was never in the room. I used levitation spell to work the cuffs. The cops know it.”
“And the phone?”
“I picked his pocket earlier. It’s all on surveillance.”
“I’ll talk to Chief Thompson about letting you know when the trial is if you swear you won’t try to kill Antonio beforehand.”
“I swear. I already said I’d let him have his trial.”
“The FBI’s here. You might want to stay away. One of them doesn’t like elves and doesn’t want me on the case.”
“Which one?”
“Tell you that and let you give him more reason to hate elves? No.
“Kat, I know it’s the nature of all Unseelie to cause trouble, but it’s time to find new hunting grounds. Let us find Robin and Julie.”
Kat’s head whipped up. “Robin?”
“The boy that’s missing. The case I mentioned last night is a couple of kids got kidnapped.”
“His name is Robin? That’s got to be tough for you.”
“It is.”
“Anything I can do to help?”
“I don’t even know what I can do. Just keep out of trouble.”
“For Robin.”
“He’s not our Robin.”
“I know, but our Robin would want that. He liked the children found. I’ll keep out of the way. How’s the leg?”
“Good. I spent the weekend Underhill to help it heal. I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow. I think I’ll get the cast off. It feels healed, but I want to make sure I’m not missing anything.”
Kat laid a hand on my thigh, just above the cast. She raised an eyebrow. “Did you do that?”
“A phantasm did,” I admitted.
“You constructed a phantasm healer?”
“No. I just wanted her to help me if I fell.”
“Her?” Kat grinned.
I grinned too. “Why not have a pretty face to help?”
I stood. “I need to go see what I’m doing. I’ll talk to Thompson for you.”
“Thanks.”

She sent half-naked selfies to all his contacts, cool... I'd be okay with that, my social status would go up 50 points.
