Description
The doctor did x-rays and looked and double-checked. They’d seen my rapid healing, but they still questioned everything. Finally, they agreed the x-rays were accurate and decided I no longer needed the cast.
My leg was stiff, and I’d have to use a cane for a few days. I would need a little bit of therapy. They set up a few appointments. Like everything else, they didn't know how my recovery would vary from humans. I didn't know either. It had been a long time since I had an injury so severe and I didn't want to think back to that time.
I needed to wait a bit before I could drive. Again, we were playing it by ear, but given the shape of my ears, that could go differently than expected. I'm more aware of the workings of my body than the average human. I only need to focus to know how any part is functioning. I would know when I could drive again.
Lorraine took me home so I could change into some pants that weren’t cut to accommodate the cast. As I changed, she started packing her stuff. I stopped getting dressed and took her in my arms. "You're leaving already?" I kissed her. "You’re not going to give me a chance to thank you properly for how good you take taking care of me?"
"You'd like that, wouldn't you?"
"And you wouldn't?" Right along, she'd been happy with our arrangement. Friends with benefits suited both our needs. I wasn't prone to monogamy and she didn't want a commitment. She'd only been divorced about two years.
"Of course I would. I think you'd be of be sick of my nagging."
"And us being under different roofs would stop that?"
"I'll stay tonight. I won't get all packed up today."
"That's the only reason you staying?" I kissed her again, thinking of skipping work and thanking her this afternoon.
She pulled away. "Not now. You have kids to find. And I have to work. I'll be back tonight and maybe tomorrow night. Now, I need to pack."
"You could move in," I suggested on impulse.
"No. We’d drive each other crazy."
"We would. But we’d have fun in the process."
Lorraine laughed. "You're incorrigible."
I pulled her close for another kiss. This time, she didn't stop me. I'd have to help her pack.

I love the opening sustained narrative. Fantastic addition to the story. I think that x-ray has a few extra bones.
