“Medicine Shield” Print 116 Many times, I have called upon the wisdom of the Native American to guide me in designing the many Native prints that I have had on display, and this print “Native Shield” there can be no exception. One afternoon I was on my way out of my doctor’s office from the labs they had taken later on that week. I was encouraged to find out that my A- 1 C and everything that had to do with my diabetes, was good, and they would see me again in three months. As I started to make my way toward the door, which was directly in front of me, an elderly Native couple came passed me. I noticed that the man’s shirt had a Sioux medicine wheel imprinted on his chest. I smiled and exclaimed “ I like your shirt “ The man nodded his head, and we both continued on our way. That night I thought about the individual, and the shirt that he wore, and I began to map out the colors of the medicine wheel, the four directions a warrior must take throughout his lifetime, also the many spirits that protect a warrior from harm. In a sense, the individual I met that day was guiding me through the creation of the “Medicine Shield.”
