Description
Those of you who know me are probably thinking, “Oh no here comes another Native American reflection.” On the contrary. There is the Asian culture out there, whose way of life and traditions I have come to admire, and respect.
A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to hire a Japanese woman to work as my P.C.A. or, personal care attendant. She would come to my apartment on Friday nights, and help me with the cooking and the cleaning, and the other chores around the house, then leave early Sunday morning.
While she worked, she would tell me things about her culture. I became fascinated with the customs, rituals, and way of life of her people. I began to incorporate her beliefs into a number of my illustrations.
Sometimes she would bring her young son of three years, along with her on a shift so that both of them could make it to his Taekwondo class on Saturday mornings.
I think I should mention that “Taekwondo” is a Korean form of martial arts, and not Japanese. A few times, as she was helping the little man dress into his Dobock, I noticed a tiger patch on the right side. Just above his shoulder.
I think back to those days when she and I worked together. Who would have thought that my little man, my little tiger would play such an intricate part in “Tiger’s Lair”
