Description
Utla and her most promising apprentice review the finer points of potion mixing on the way to the market, as Utla’s other apprentice pauses to enjoy the view from the bridge.
==AMY’S NOTES==
I’ve been wanting to do some scenes of Utla and her apprentices at the market, using some of Faveral’s medieval city sets, but I’m still trying to figure out how to render the kind of bright sunlight I’d want for market day. I also go back and forth about how much detail to include, as a market could potentially get pretty elaborate.
I’ve had this "Merlin’s Crossing" set in a WIP scene for several years now, and every once in a while various characters wander through it, as I check to see who might look right. I love the set, and it has a variety of interesting little places in it for posing characters (including a sword stuck into a pile of stones!), but for some reason I find it hard to find the right characters and the right spot. By the time Utla and her companions came wandering through, I decided it was time to take a snapshot and move on to something else. Possibly another camera angle, or possibly another set. We’ll see :-)
While I generally prefer bringing the camera in tight, I did two versions of this scene to better show off the set.
Rendered in April 2022 using Firefly in Poser Pro 11.3 for Mac at 3200 × 1800 pixels. DOF applied in Photoshop. View full size on my blog.

Beautiful setting and your characters fit in perfectly! Personally I prefer the wide angle version as it shows more of the setting without loosing focus on Utla and her apprentices. Excellent work!

Thanks so much for the comment! I like the new feature that allows you to include more than one image with a post, so that viewers can decide which they like best (without the poster filling up the gallery with variations on the same theme!) I have some scene ideas that really need a wider camera angle, pulled back to show more scenery, and maybe I can convince myself to do that if I also plan to include a view that's closer in on the characters :-)

It's a beautiful scene and lighting. I have Koit and Puntik too but I've never use them, I might be learn from you and Kelchis3 to do fantasy scenes.
perpetualrevision
I'm quite sure you can do some lovely fantasy scenes! Your soft lighting and composition skills are well-suited to the genre :-)

Well it all looks good to me. Wide and tight camera shots as you know are just as important as the subjects in a scene. Nice work.

colour me crazy, but my first thought when looking at this was : that's a game i'd want to play
i am already wondering what ingredients i will need to find, beg, borrow or steal, who i will have to speak with to progress in my quest, what things i might learn along the way, lores of the 'country', etc. love it, and i'll say it again 'i wanna play that video game!!' hehe

I absolutely LOVE this comment, Giana!! You totally brightened my day :-) I don't play RPG type games much myself, but my wife plays a lot, so I'm familiar with the kind of things you might want to do with game characters like these! I esp. love the idea of playing these characters on some kind of quest to gather ingredients to make spells to solve various problems, as opposed to having to do battle with any bad guys! I played Oblivion for a while, but I spent most of my time gathering ingredients for potions and storing them at the add-on manor I purchased (in order to get the horse that doesn't die, if I recall correctly). I only fought off bad guys when they took me by surprise, and I've always wondered why game makers don't offer non-violent versions of the games they've created in such beautiful worlds!

I love how you gave them all different personalities and show it through their actions. Great work!

Thanks so much for the insightful comment! I feel kinda bad for making Koit a bit of a dopey daydreamy apprentice, but perhaps he brought that on himself :-)

Lovely composition, superb environment and lighting, brilliant render. Exquisite Artwork. I love it!
Could you please provide an image or a link to an image so we may have a more clear picture of that kind of light you wish for your scene?

Thank you so much for the comment! I think the bright sunlight I got in this render is headed in the right direction, but I want it a bit brighter without being overblown. I've used a lighting setup similar to this one with the medieval marketplace I want to use for "market day," but it doesn't work as well with buildings as it does with nature scenery. I use an infinite light as a sun and an HDRI image on an IBL light (which is faster than using an HDRI sphere and rendering with IDL enabled in Firefly and produces about the same results). I've gotten some tips on bright sun light from Molly and poser4me, but they use Superfly, so I'll keep working on it in Firefly!

Vert nice scene.

Thank you so much! Nursoda's characters are so fun to work with!

Wonderful setting and characters. Looks like a lovely day

Thanks so much for the comment! I think the sunshine worked out OK in this one. Not sure why I can't get it the way I want in other settings, but I'm working on figuring it out :-)
Flint_Hawk
You have found the perfect characters for this lovely setting & the differences between the apprentices are so well portrayed! Fantastic work!
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much, Flint_Hawk! I feel kinda bad for making Koit seem a bit like a dopey daydreamer, but then again, it's possible he brought that on himself! Puntik has always seemed the more studious of the two :-)
Radar_rad-dude
Marvelous results with this fantastic setting! These characters seem to fit in so very nicely! A most delightful and charming scene! Many fine praises from me!
OmniFX
Very interesting, great little scene and story!
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much for the comment! I've done a few scenes with Utla and her apprentices, but I keep thinking I should work up a bit more of an actual story! Or maybe the occasional scenes tell a story well enough :-)
MeInOhio
They both look nice. The second is more panoramic. The hanging vines are more noticable.

What lovely characters to enjoy. Oh so fun.

Super Cool POV!

What a nice cheerful creation, Utla always has such a nice expression on her face I think.

I've little to add to all that was said above although I disagree with the first opinion which liked the wider angle picture better; I prefer tighter images of the characters for the most part. After all, they are the story but, in the end, that's just a matter of opinion as to which is better. In visual story-telling I often mover from scene setting wide shot to a more focused shot so... =)
Bright sunlight looks pretty good, here, really. =/
Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed viewing!
