Description
Hope the mothers out there enjoy a Mother’s Day that’s out of this world :-)
==AMY’S NOTES==
My wife and I went to see the Meow Wolf installation in Denver on Friday, and I kept feeling inspired to try putting together some kind of surreal scene. Then I remembered that Sunday was Mother’s Day, and naturally aliens came to mind :-) I may still want to try my hand at a surreal scene, but I’ll probably need to visit Meow Wolf at least one more time first!
Rendered in May 2022 using Firefly in Poser Pro 11.3 for Mac at 3200 × 1800 pixels. IDL enabled. View full size on my blog.

This is a nice render Amy.I love Aiko 3. Your blog is very professional and beautiful. Have a nice day.
perpetualrevision
Thank you so much, Gisela! I have a lot of stuff for Aiko 3 and really should use her more often! :-)
kelchris3
Awww beautiful!!
perpetualrevision
Thanks! Gosha makes a pretty dorky looking alien, esp. compared to the elegance of A3, so maybe he's adopted :-) And every runtime needs a dorky alien!!
Annerose
Mother and child alien in an alien world. I like the color setting and the strange plants. They look like mixture of mushrooms and trees. And they are glowing. Very nicely done. I wish you a pleasant mothers day!

Thanks for the comment! I love Petipet's alien worlds and vegetation! They're so... different!

Something like the love between mother and child are just universal.
perpetualrevision
Thanks for the comment! That's esp. true when the son has a face only a mother could love :-) (Gosha makes a pretty dorky alien, but I suppose he's also kinda cute!)

Thanks for the comment, CD! I love getting the chance to play with Petipet's alien worlds :-)

Wonderful. Love the lighting and shadows. Great color use.
perpetualrevision
Thanks! The lighting was a little tricky, and using IDL left those weird black square spots on the terrain, but I figure with an alien world, anything's possible, so I didn't try to fix it!

Aaawww, adorable!

Love the color scheme and and contrast!
perpetualrevision
Thank you! I tried so many different textures for the clothing and so many different skies, but in the end keeping everything in the blue family seemed to work best :-)

Beautiful scene, love the lighting! Planet Iridia is perfect for night scenes and mother and child both seem to enjoy the mood. Excellent work!
perpetualrevision
Thanks for the comment! I do like using Petipet's alien worlds in darker lighting, to let the glowy bits really glow. I enabled IDL for this one, but I didn't realize until later that it had left those weird little square blotches on the terrain pillars. I've gotten those blotches on other terrains, and sometimes I can reduce them by adjusting the light's shadow settings, but more often I just turn IDL back off and use an IBL light instead. This time I decided to just leave it as is b/c I figured in an alien world, maybe those square blotches are normal!

What a wonderful and very creative image !!

Love your Alien Mother's Day scene!
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much, robertswww! This is one of those scenes that looked awful for several hours of working on it, until I made just the right set of changes and it started to look promising!

Ethereal magic Artwork. Superb Sci-Fi scene, brilliant awesome composition and render. Wonderful Mother's Day scene.
Magnificent Masterpiece of Finest Arts. I love it!

Awesome looking alien landscape! Sweet scene!

Thanks! Petipet makes some amazing alien worlds :-)

I love your scene, it has the right atmosphere (I hope there is atmosphere) for the mother and child. Thanks for sharing.
perpetualrevision
Thanks! I'm guessing it has whatever atmosphere suits them? I did try enabling Poser's Depth Cue atmosphere, for a bit of a misty effect in the background, but I decided I liked the scene better without it.

A really well done and different Mother's Day picture (Gosha is a child that only a mother could love... XD But in this picture he actually looks kind of sweet). I've had those square blotches a bit; they seem to correspond with the mesh. I wonder if using Poser subdivision would help?
Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed viewing.

Thanks, Molly! Yeah, Gosha is definitely an acquired taste :-) He has some cute characters and outfits, but for the most part I think of him as Mavka's unfortunate step-brother. (Although I may have used them as a romantic couple a time or two.) He does make a kind of charmingly goofy alien, though!
When I first came across the rectangular blotches in an IDL render, I scoured the forums and found that most likely answer had something to do with the shadow min bias setting, and my experiments confirmed that, to an extent. I don't think I tried subdivision, and this particular set would probably be too high poly for that, but it's something I'll check out in the future. It's such an odd problem, esp. since it doesn't happen consistently. But on the upside, it did lead me to discover that rendering with an HDRI on an IBL light with AO enabled works nearly as well (in Firefly) as using IDL with the HDRI on an envirosphere and is MUCH faster. (In other words, the big discovery for me was that the HDR image you attach to an IBL light does not have to be mapped like a light probe; it just needs to be set to gamma correction 1 and IBL contrast 3). Granted, there are some glowy effects that Firefly can only achieve with IDL enabled, but for this alien scene, I really didn't need to use IDL at all (and would've re-rendered if I'd thought the blotches were a big enough problem!) I'm sure Firefly's glitchy implementation of IDL is one of the things you don't miss, now that you can use Superfly :-)

How nice that Mother's Day is also celebrated there. Very nicely conceived and made.

Thanks so much for the comment, artdreamer!

That's some very helpful information about using HDR images on the IBL in Firefly that I did not know! Thanks, Amy!
