Description
The odd couple and their new companion, Sir Squeaker, slept through the heat of the afternoon and into the late evening at a camp Jorl quickly built. After the sun set, Jorl kindled a fire to make soup of fowl the cat girl brought back from a brief hunting sortie. While the soup simmered Sir Squeaker examined the scroll he was to place within the thorax of the Iron Golem guarding the Royal Crypt.
"Hmm," he hemmed as he examined the text. "Unfortunately I don't speak much Elvish..."
"Wait a moment!" Jorl sputtered. "You can read!?!"
"Of a certainty. Most everyone can, no?"
"Well I can't so tell me what you understand that scroll to say, Squeaker," the cat girl purred amiably.
Jorl sighed. "So I have nae reading skills. I bring other skills to the table."
The rat glanced Jorl. "As you say. We'll need your combat skills and," the little rat considered his next words and finally settled on, "Leadership talent!" Jorl harrumphed but accepted the flattery at face value. The rat continued, "Now again, it's mostly Elvish and my Elven vocabulary is limited but it seems to say that if the scroll is successfully placed within the Golem's thorax it will turn to stone."
"Stone, eh?" Jorl considered. "Like as a statue, then. We can 'andle that."
Squeaker nodded. "I think I'll have to have you tie this around my neck so I'm free to move quickly. I'll enter the crypt first and when you follow a bit later and the Golem comes out, I'll scamper up it's leg and into the thorax and settle the scroll in it's heart."
"Just make sure you move quickly. I've no desire to dance with that Golem again!" the cat girl exclaimed.
Molly's art notes: Set up and rendered in Poser 12.0.757 with Superfly Cycles 2 and tweaked in Photoshop for a bit of glow (spectral bloom) and vignette. I'm getting better with night scenes and having a roaring fire helps. ;) (Wink) I struggled with how tight to pull in the camera and may have left it with too wide a view. I guess finding Sir Squeaker will be a little like playing "Where's Waldo?".
The catgirl is A3 using some very old material from DAZ I was reminded of some time ago by Mazzam. The textures haven't aged well and I messed with them to try to give the impression of fur rather than plastic (the hair was the worst >.<). The Dwarf is by Sixus1 and is available at Renderosity. Squeaker is from Poser software and is part of the Toon World bundle. The setting has components by Second Bastion.

Brilliant scene..and a quality piece of lighting...think the field of view is fine any closer and you would lose all that lovely βnaturalβ feeling ambient light.....found Sir Squeaker, front and centre..just where he should be..quality dialogue / storytelling...always a pleasure...!!

Your comment is very helpful! It certainly alleviates my worries about how I framed this scene, DG. I hope you will continue to enjoy this story! =)

I love that the rat is the only one who can read! Hopefully his limited Elvish isn't too far off of what the scroll actually says. Like DG, I like the camera angle here, as it establishes their location, feels cozy, and makes it easy to see the three main characters. I can see Sir Squeaker pretty easily, but I always zoom into images using a trackpad gesture on my Mac. He's also quite easy to see if you click the "open full image in new tab" button and click to enlarge to full size. He looks rather cute holding that little scroll :-) It sounds like Jori's estimation of the rat might be going up just a tad bit?
MollyFootman
Thanks, Amy. You and Darkglass have really relieved my anxiety regarding how I framed this image. I am coming to really enjoy Sir Squeaker and he recognizes that the best way to befriend the gruff dwarf is with flattery. XD
I'm now working on a version of the scroll that I can tie around the little rascal's neck for the next few pictures. >.< Fortunately, I've got several likely bits of content; just need to buckle down! =)

Think the rat's gonna be running this outfit...:)
Like the glow from the fire. Soft, warm light bring out the best in features - toons or real.
MollyFootman
Thank you for your helpful and encouraging comment about the light from the fire, JD.=)
I think Sir Squeaker has more leadership potential than Jorl but is smart enough to flatter the grumpy dwarf to keep the peace. XD

they need to break out a pipe and smoke a bit in this warm calm atmo. What's for dinner?
MollyFootman
Heh. Dinner would be some soup from the cauldron and I'm sure Jorl would agree that a pipe after dinner would be perfect. Thanks for the comment, my dear! =)
