Description
Land-dwelling horses don’t always come when you call, so it’s pretty impressive when a half-fish horse does, without even the need to shake a can of grain!
==AMY’S NOTES==
I started this scene a few years ago and then put it away, probably b/c I couldn’t get the lighting right. When I re-opened it, I was a bit mystified by the lighting, as I’d apparently been trying a lot of different things to get a bit of caustics into the scene. Rather than start over with the lighting, I fiddled with it a bit and then decided it was fine for the subject matter. It’s not every day you get to depict a mermaid’s horse!
Rendered in May 2022 using Firefly in Poser Pro 11.3 for Mac at 3200 × 1800 pixels. DepthCue atmosphere enabled. View full size on my blog.

Beautiful and such a cool merm/horse.
perpetualrevision
Thanks! That "merhorse" (not sure why it's called a "hippocampus" when "merhorse" seems more appropriate??) is a very old figure, and the textures are fairly low-res, but it came out OK in this scene. Given that the textures don't have a lot of shape-specific details, I suppose I should try using some "universal materials" from my vast collection!
eekdog
a awesome underwater adventure you created with all the details.
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much! There's something about an underwater environment that makes me want to add lots of little details, one might even say a few too many on occasion :-)
jmattatall
Terrific scene!

Thanks so much for the comment!

Aww So nice.
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much, Gisela! I actually repurposed a lot of this scene from an earlier one: Kiss Your Sea Turtle Day, so it was mainly the peculiar Mermaid's Horse I wanted to feature. I think that figure is even odder than the mystical fish!

Very lovely scene came out really well! Very cool looking sea horse!
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much for the comment! That is an interesting interpretation of "sea horse," isn't it?!
CoolDimension
Lovely! Great underwater feel! Great posing! I love the painterly look to this!
perpetualrevision
Thanks for the comment! It was kind of hard to know how to pose the "seahorse" b/c how would such a creature move through water? But this is fantasy, after all, so I suppose it can trot/swim!

Enchanting!
madame
Beautiful underwater scene, love the delicate colors and the mood !!
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much for the comment! I do love how the colors come out in an undersea render :-)
EVargas
Beautiful scene capturing a magical moment, love the colors, thank you for sharing!
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much for the comment! If mermaids aren't magical enough, seeing a horse creature like that would certainly make it so! I do enjoy the colors and lighting of underwater scenes and scenery :-)

It's also wonderfully done my friend, just love it a lot!

This is beautiful, your pretty much ready to do an Aquaman 1.5 before we get the second one. Love the water reflections, very nice.

Thanks for the comment! I think the lighting in this one mainly used some light gels from 2nd World's Underwater Wonders set (and/or possibly from Cybertenko's Captain Nemo's Hunting Grounds). Undersea scenes are probably the only occasion on which it works to use a light gel on an infinite light!

I bought 2nd World's Underwater Wonders but sad to learn you can't get the lighting effects in Superfly only in Firefly. I'll work around it through compositing the two.
perpetualrevision
Since the lighting effect involves a "cheat," I'm not surprised that Superfly can't do it! But there must be another way to render water caustics in Superfly? Or the method of compositing two renders might just do the trick!

What a wonderful scene.
gerberc
Love your interpretation of a sea horse and the underwater lighting is spot on! Well done!
Radar_rad-dude
How true! I haven't had that day yet when I could depict a mermaid's horse! Perhaps some day in the distant future I might get that privilege! A most beautiful and well rendered scene! Many fine praises from me!

I love all things Mermaid. Great Job !!!!!
misumu
A beautiful undersea image, I love the slightly muted tones.
perpetualrevision
Thanks so much! I think using DepthCue atmosphere (set to a dark low-saturation seagreen/blue) helped with the muted tones!

The sense of depth and fade from foreground to background is not quite as good in this one as in some of the other recent pictures. On the other hand, the posing and composition is lovely and all the colorful content is very attractive. I have to agree with others who love the hippocampus and it's posing. Thank you for sharing, Amy. Lots to enjoy and think about in this image. =)

Thanks, Molly! The difference is that in those other images, I was using backgrounds made by Sveva, and this one is an underwater environment (no background image). Sveva's undersea backgrounds are amazing and an inspiration to try and figure out how she made them!
I've done better underwater environment scenes than this one, and I can definitely see room for improvement, but I just couldn't figure out what to do and frankly got a bit tired of working on it. I decided to let this one be about the "mermaid's horse" more so than the environment, but I'm sure I'll return to underwater environments in the future b/c they're a lot of fun! Some of my past favorites are when I sent the Onats family undersea and when a mermaid and sea dragon had a tea party under the sea.
