Amelia gets back home after spending the whole afternoon at the library to find her father is not there, only her mother, despite this time being when her parents' favourite TV show is on, which they rarely miss. While making herself a snack, Amelia hears her father return from wherever he has been, and before she knows it she is being handed the keys to a new car! Her parents have decided to reward their daughter for having received a conditional offer from Balliol, Oxford University, where she hopes to be going in October if her A-level results are good enough (all of her teachers predict they will be). Amelia is speechless for quite some time and the only sound she is capable of making are squeals of delight as she races outside to examine the very generous gift.
