Description

It is coming to the end of another school year and, as usual, a photographer comes to St Tibb's to take photographs of each student so that parents, carers, and other interested parties can buy copies to commemorate the student at this particular stage of her life. Nadia Swinley lines up with the rest of form 7C and gets her photo taken. A few weeks later a watermarked sample image is given to her (along with order forms, of course) to take home and show to anyone she thinks would be interested in buying more copies. Many of Nadia's relatives put their name down for some and give her the required amount to pay for their photographs. But when it comes to the last day for handing orders in, Nadia is curious why her parents have not added their own requirements to the order nor given her any money yet. "Mum... Dad... remember, today's the last day for ordering my school photos. I'll be handing the order form and the money in at Registration this morning," she says at the breakfast table. "What sizes do you want? And... like... may I have the money, too, please?" Nadia's mother looks uneasily at her husband before turning to Nadia. "Uh... your dad and I have, um... we've decided we don't want any, Nadia." "What!" Nadia gasps with shock. Why would her parents not want a picture of their daughter at the end of her first year at St Tibb's? "Why not?" Again, her mother glances with some concern at her husband before responding to Nadia's question. "We... um... well, we don't like how... uh... how crooked that canine is." "Yes, Nadia," her father speaks up. "You could have smiled with your mouth closed, you do realize? Once the orthodontist says you're ready for your braces---" "Mum! Dad!" Nadia interrupts with her voice raised and gets up from the table, clearly in a distressed state. "Seriously? My teeth aren't even that bad. You're always picking on me! I'm never perfect enough for you, am I? I hate you! I hate you both! You're just mean to me all the time and... and... oh!" She bangs her fist on the table and storms out of the kitchen. Fortunately for her, it is almost time to begin her journey to St Tibb's so she grabs her blazer and school bag and slams the front door as she leaves the house. If that boy from Richard Wells Academy is waiting outside to insult her again this morning, Nadia feels she will be unable to stop her current temper doing something rather violent, and she does not care what the consequences might be. Oh gracious, poor Nadia! Her parents sound pretty awful! I can't imagine parents not wanting their child's school photo over something so trivial! It's a lovely school photo, and she has a lovely smile :-)

Nadia's parents sound like the worst, thinking they're doing the right thing for their daughter in demanding she be the best. And yes, she's quite pretty even if the slightly crooked tooth is taken into account!
