Description

It is a Saturday afternoon and there is only one more week of lessons left before Summer Term ends at St Tibb's High School and the long Summer Break will start. The weather is wonderful today, and when Leigh-Anne calls around to Nadia's house, she brings a one-piece swimsuit, fully intending to spend the rest of the day lounging in the sun, listening to cool tunes, and enjoying her friend's company. After Leigh-Anne is admitted into the house, both girls run up to Nadia's bedroom to change into cooler clothing and grab cushions, a blanket, cold drinks from the fridge, and a few other odds and ends so they can go sit out on the bench at the front of Nadia's house and enjoy the amazing weather. Nadia offers to put some nail-polish on her friend's toes. Leigh-Anne has no objection to this and she puts in her earpods, finds a good playlist on her phone, and leans back on the bench as Nadia begins painting her toes. While Nadia's hands are occupied with the relaxing motion of applying nail-polish to Leigh-Anne's toenails (she finds actions in which she can establish a strong rhythmical pattern will ease the co-ordination problems which her DCD---developmental co-ordination disorder, or dyspraxia as some still call it---can produce), her conscious thoughts stray onto that annoying boy from Richard Wells Academy who has started timing his school journey so that he coincides with Nadia as she begins hers, usually to insult her about something very trivial (he was critcizing her school bag the other day, for example), and she has now begun to expect it every school morning. "I wonder what's he called..." she wonders, knowing that Leigh-Anne probably cannot hear her and cannot see her lips moving as she looks down at her friend's toes. "And how can I find out without dying of embarrassment by, like, asking him?" She shares a lot with Leigh-Anne but she does not dare admit to having so many thoughts about a boy from that school. She takes a break when she has finished Leigh-Anne's toes but before beginning on her friend's fingernails and looks up along the street. Her eyes linger in the direction the Richard Wells boy normally comes from when he approaches her house, and she finds herself hoping that---maybe, just maybe---he will wander by today and catch sight of her in her swimming outfit. The thought of what kind of attention he will pay her when he sees her dressed this way makes Nadia smile. Cute scene of the girls enjoying some summer weather! I love the look of blissful relaxation on Leigh-Anne's face and the look of wistful contemplation on Nadia's face. I'm guessing she's started to see his bullying comments as an awkward attempt at flirting?

Thank you! Yes, I think Nadia knows that the antagonism she's getting from "that Richard Wells boy" is not what it seems on the surface and there's something intriguing underneath even if she doesn't quite recognize what it is yet.
