Ah, anamorphic art. It's also used for the word "stop" on the road. If you look at it, the letters are stretched out so that you can read the word when driving up to it. They used to have stretched out faces in paintings. The paintings were hung on a wall in a staircase. When people walk up, they would see this face looking at them and think it was a ghost.
