Description
“We all have certain powers." said Kagran, "- but not all of them are developed in other worlds. Some will only develop when we enter another world and time - who knows what you might find in yourself in such a world as ours?"
“Just how powerful are you, then?” asked Sarah.
"I can summon dragons. for example. But – dragons have their own powers; I can summon – but not command. I can do much - but there are limits – not many, though.
The people refer to me as magician, or a wizard. Magician is rather a blanket term for anyone who can do what they call ‘magic’.
There are simple conjurors who call themselves magicians but use sleight of hand to achieve a special effect. . No real powers, but clever.
And then there are those who actually cause change:. Wizards and Sorcerers.
Wizards rely on wordy spells, chants to focus their thoughts – some use jewels and crystals. And there are degrees of intelligence - or stupidity - among the wizards just as among ordinary mortals.
But the real ‘magic makers’ are the Sorcerers. They can cause lasting change by thought alone."
"And you call yourself a sorcerer?"
"I am not entirely sure if the word you here really accurately translates the word I use. I suspect there isn't a true translation that coveys the full meaning of our word 'Sulvarc'."
" More important than a wizard?"
"Much, much more, Sarah."
"As an example, take the castle on that hill behind the village, the one you can see from your room. It is a castle that two spell-chanting little wizards fought for. Their powers equal, they froze the castle in time, and the inhabitants stand or lie where they were, and cannot move again until released. The wizards cannot do it.
A sorcerer can unfreeze that spell with a simple order.
But - as an example of the different powers they wield,” Kagran continued, “look here - “ and a picture appeared on the wall opposite them, “is a village scene. There is a pub; its sign is painted. Suppose you wanted the sign to be red all over.
A spell-chanter can turn the sign red by covering it in red paint. That’s a bit like feeding a yellow canary red pepper to turn it red. The red fades when the pepper is withdrawn. And red colours fade in bright sunshine. It’s cosmetic. In the case of the sign, wind and rain will wear away the paint.
A sorcerer will turn the sign red - through and through - every atom of the wood will be red. And it will stay so until the sign crumbles into dust, red dust.”
“But now come with me,” he said, “and let me show you just what I mean by power.”
Sarah followed him out of the room. Kagran made for a doorway in the corner and led the way up to a small room in the tower. Here he opened the window as wide as possible.
“Now,” said Kagran, “look now - “ and pointed at the great storm clouds that were boiling black and menacing above them.
“Here is energy to spare!” he shouted above the storm, “here where the heavens tear themselves apart with lightning and blast the world with thunder! This energy I can draw upon, and this I can turn to whatever use I will - and that is more than the others can boast; and such power as it gives me would make me the ruler of the world, if I so chose.”
“Listen to the sound of the light!” he shouted at her, “listen to the music of the colours in the sky - what is sound is light, what is light is music, and all is bound together in one great symphony of vibrating energy - and all this, all this, is at my command!”
And I choose to let it be.
I do not wish to rule this world; my duty is to use my powers to protect it.
But there are others who have different ideas.
There are good and bad humans.
And good and bad sorcerers."

I like it, Sunbeam! A great and powerful story full of all the right mystery and intrigue! And a wonderful image to accompany it! Bravo, You are on a roll!
Have you thought of just as an experiment on the side, to run your story through chatGTP to see how it would interpret it? I haven't done anything like that before but the thought gives me pause. I know I have been entertained by the stories that chatGTP does come up with in a limited fashion. Just a thought.

You have a very engaging story going here and the picture illustrates the text very well. Thank you for sharing, I look forward to more of this as you see fit. =)

This is really a beautifully done image & related story, unfortunately I can't comment on all your recent artwork because it takes too much of my strength and I hope I can recover it at least partially after my Rhea cure. Just for your information, for an animation it takes me between 1-2 days to get it so that I can upload it, but then I have to rest again for a whole day.
