~Pocahontas~
Since this Disney princess was a historical figure and I was going to depict her, I did some research to learn more about her. First thing I discovered was that her name was Amonute, while Pocahontas ("the playful one" in her native Powhatan language) was just a nickname.
The Disney adaptation aimed for a less traumatic experience, sticking to their tradition of a mandatory happy ending. Consequently, the portrayal diverges significantly from the historical account. In the Disney version, the Powhatan tribe was immune to European diseases, Pocahontas is portrayed as an adult who willingly departs her tribe, and her name and culture were preserved. She had a willful romantic involvement with John Rolfe, but didn't marry him, and she ultimately returns to her people by her own choice. This version significantly diminishes the tragic aspects of Amonute's actual story, primarily focusing on culture shock. That makes sense, since we don't want to scare the children.
