Description
Lilja is escorted through the stronghold manufactory of Baron Mikel Von Reanimeister by the mechanical revenant. It becomes apparent that Lilja is a spark as was noted long ago by Miss Panikin.
Molly's art notes: Set up and rendered with Poser 13.0.339 using the Superfly Cycles X rendering engine; some post work was done within Superfly and some accomplished with Photoshop. The separate images were mounted into a graphic novel page using Comic Life 3.5.21. Lilja Darkstar is based upon La Femme with modifications by Tempesta3d. The mechanical revenant is based upon Victoria 4. The setting is the by Applejack. The other clanks are from Vanishing Point (I think) and no longer seem to be available. I thought I'd give the graphic novel format a try for the steampunk story I've been working on forever. While focusing on layout I may have lost a bit of the linguistic style I was trying for my characters. Of more concern is it's pretty busy and it may be hard to follow the story here. I did include full size versions of the original panels. Finally, I worry that it's harder for those who don't speak English to manage this format since cutting and pasting into a translator is not available with the images on a graphic page. Therefore, I reprinted the dialog below; if you use Google Chrome it can translate (right click and choose translate) or you can easily cut and paste into translating software.
Let me know if this method of story-telling works for you with special regard to this story. Some stories lend themselves to this format more than others. Your mileage may vary... 😆
------------------------ Dialog for use in Translating software follows this break--------------------------------------
PANEL 1
Narration: Lilja is escorted by the mechanical being through the manufactory located within the stronghold of Baron Mikel Von Renaimister. The creature fascinates her. It is clearly not human but not entirely clank. Most intriguing to the young heiress is how different such things appear to her upon recovering consciousness in the Baron's Stronghold. It seems to her that her eyes are open to the movement and flow of magnetic aether that had previously been invisible to normal humans... ...but easily visible to a spark!
Lilja: As you were present upon my regaining my senses, I assume you are meant to guard me. The injury that rendered me insensate that i might easily be conveyed here changed me. For instance, though you never speak I can see a perturbation in the magnetic fluids in your head indicating you understand me. Watching those same fluids I can see you wish to speak. Superficial observation of your construction suggests you have that ability... why not speak?
PANEL 2
Mechanical Girl: The Baron requires my compliance, not speech. I am clank enough to see that you are a spark.
Lilja (thinking): I must try to get it... her... to interact with me that I might learn more of my situation.
PANEL 3
Lilja (Speaking): Yes. I see things in a way that was not possible for me prior to the blow on the head I received by my captors. I am, indeed, a freshly minted spark.
Mechanical Girl: Very well, lady Spark. Tell me how I compare to yon clank?
Lilja: It is more primitive. It has a clankseed in its think pot; a very unsophisticated one, I think. You, however, lack a think pot or clankseed. I sense biological materials. You are partially revenant.
PANEL 4
Mechanical Girl: Well spotted, Lady spark. Bits of me were once as human as you. The Baron's best efforts at writing a clankseed are very... unsophisticated; just as you say.
PANEL 5
Lilja: It's clear to me now that the Baron wants to have the Darkstar clankseed patterns. His willingness to toy with revenant beings such as yourself suggests great desperation despite his bluster.
Mechanical Girl: Very perceptive, my lady spark, for all the good it does you.

Superb Mollz.
Really look forward to reading and watching these - sorta envious also....

Thank you, JD. I'm always glad to hear from you and I'm pleased you like this. I don't know how long I'll have the energy for telling the story in this format, but for the moment it made a nice change and it seems as though it is being reasonably well-received. I look at how many images I've done in this story line and at my rough outline and am appalled that I am only a bit more than half way through! 🙄

Fascinating!

Thank you, my dear!😊

Fantastic images and intriguing story! In my opinion it's one of your best works: the steampunk atmosphere is perfect, the lights too (I especially love the fourth panel) and I really like the nuance of the text boxes. As far as I'm concerned, I can follow the story well without having to reprint the dialog, but I'll never be able to distinguish a linguistic style of the characters because I'm a foreigner.
MollyFootman
Thank you for the very helpful comment, my dear! I was worried a lot about the "flow" of this page and you are helping me feel confident that it can be read and understood. The linguistic style I am trying for would be the language of Victorian England and as present day North American, my English is quite different than that! 🙄
I hope you will continue to enjoy my images and stories!❤

Oui cela aiderait évidemment.
MollyFootman

Never worry, my dear! Thanks so much for dropping a nice comment and best of luck with all the difficulties of moving. I HATE moving! I'll remember you in my prayers and hope your situation stabilizes soon.

I know the comic style takes a little effort, but it is very nice. Nice enough to be published in paper. You did well in capturing the language as it sells the art and story, very well done indeed.
MollyFootman
Thank you for such a helpful comment, my dear! I am especially relieved to hear that you think the language style is working. It's a constant conflict between seeking an archaic sense and achieving clarity for the contemporary reader. 😆

This is brilliant, Molly! Looking at your layout here, I'm blown away by your skill AND your patience. I'm pretty sure you are minus a few hairs after putting this together. Be careful, or you'll end up bald like me.. 😉😂
I'm enjoying the dialog between Lilja and the mech girl. And the balloons are superb. You're inspiring me, Molly!
Dammit... I really need to get off my backside (or technically ON my backside) and get TNA rolling again. I chose a very simple 5-panel (with inserts now and then) after ripping out most of my hair back in the early days trying out about 38,663 or so layouts. I may be looking at different layouts again, but the present one seems to work well, and has kind of become a recognizable look for the story.
MollyFootman
Thanks for your very kind and supportive comment, Rod. I don't know what page layout software you use or if you do it all in Photoshop or Gimp or some such. Comic Life is what I am using and I recommend it. =) I'm always changing up my layouts depending on the story and how I want it to strike someone. I'm not always successful but I AM always learning! XD I always look forward to what you share and I expect I'll get ideas and learn from you as I do from just about everyone around here. ;-)

Oh this is wonderful!!! I love the story and being able to see the panels together and in separate images!!! You make me want to buy more and use LaFemme. LOL
MollyFootman
Thank you so much, Kellie! I having been working on this story for so long and this is my first effort at telling it with the graphic novel format. Encouraging words like yours make me determined to keep using it. XD As for La Femme, I find her and her male counterpart L'Homme really easy to use and very flexible. And wanting to buy more? I'm sure Jenn will be delighted to hear that! ;-)

Radar_rad-dude
She is an amazing lady! I hope she succeeds with the clank sentient! I think there is potential there! Excellent chapter, Molly!
MollyFootman
Thanks! I'm so glad to finally get back to Lilja as she was always meant to be the main character. I didn't want to skimp on Sonja's bit in the story. We'll see if I can keep it up! XD

MajinBoo
Oh wow I love the layout and adding the separate panels to get an unobstructed view of your work is nice touch.
MollyFootman
Thank you, my dear! It's a lot of work and I don't know that I'll have the necessary energy to keep it up, but for the moment I'm going to use this method of story-telling. =)

Stellar work again. Brilliant awesome render. Exquisite Artwork. I love it!

Thank you, Marius. This story has gone on for a lot of images... I'm glad you are still looking in on it! ;-)

This new bubble graphic looks great again, I especially like the many small details that you only discover when you take a closer look and I totally agree with John!

Thank you for your sweet comment, Ute! =)
