Its been a while since I did a Classical mythology render... This is the story of Aphrodite and Adonis (or one version, at least...there are many!). The Goddess fell in love with the mortal shepherd Adonis, comeliest of mortal men; the jealous Ares unleashed a wild boar that fatally gored Adonis while he was out hunting. Heatbroken, Aphrodite was unable to save him and he died of his wounds in her arms. Her tears, mingling with his blood, fell to earth and became scarlet anemones. The site of the tragedy is said by some to be the pool at the foot of the falls of Afqa in Lebanon. To this day, in springtime, a red tinge can be seen in the water and the scarlet anemones bloom each year in eternal remembrance....
