Description

This celebrates two wonderfully evocative pieces by Claude Debussy; the 3rd movement of "Suite Bergamasque", better known as "Claire de Lune" (Moonlight in English) , and the 8th prelude " La fille aux cheveux de lin " (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair). Both were inspired by poems, but the music has far surpassed the words that inspired it; after all, many (most?) people will recognise and be able to hum the melodies, but I suspect few can quote anything by Paul Veraline or Leconte de Lisle (well, I certainly can't!). An intersting aside... An orchestrated version of Claire de Lune was originially to be included in Walt Disney's 1940 film "Fantasia", but was dropped to runtime constraints. The scene was rediscovered in 1992 and included in an extednded cut .

I'm sure Debussy would Be delighted just like I am...This image is superb, it invites us to dream of a beautiful "fille aux cheveux de lin"

This is a great image Joe. With the comb of her agile fingers, she picks out the notes that cling to the staves of her melancholy hair. she guesses that the moon is jealous of her spectral whiteness. For my part, I like what Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata leaves floating in my thoughts

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, as always - i love the image of her hair forming amusical stave! 😊 I'm also fond of the Beethoven, which despite its ubiquity remains a masterpiece. Iyts interesting to me though that he never intended for that piece to be associated with "moonlight"; its orginal title was "Sonata quasi una fantasia". It only aquired the "Mondscheinsonate" name many years later (possibly even after his death), from Ludwig Rellstab... (and I must confess , to my ears, the minuet of the second movement, and the third movement with its sofrzando and arpeggios are not particularly hardly serene...maybe theres a storm onthe lake where the moonis shining! 😆).

Oh, this is so perfect for that magnificent piece of music! This is gorgeous, Joe! We seem to have similar taste in music as well! I've loved classical since I was old enough to walk (and listen!)

It was all my mum listened to, so from an ealy age i was influuenced by that, alongside the jazz and rock records of my elder brothers, and dabbling in various bands as a teenager. Many decades on and its still evolving!
