Description
Generally when I'm starting to work out how a character will look, I have a pretty clear idea in my mind of how to attire them, with many of my characters their clothing is designed to carry a hidden narrative and context whilst also paying often subliminal homage to where, what or who has influenced the idea behind the character.
With Fae for example, she has two real looks, the first being a formal workwear style attire and her second being the much softer and chilled, hippy, cool vibe that I like her to carry along within the narrative and within imagery, whereas Scorpio for example is intended to carry her pride at being a warrior, she is outwardly proud of her heritage and that is echoed within her clothing just as much as it is in her narrative.
However when it came to start working out how best to attire Savena, this clear plan wasn't quite there, the primary reason being due to Savena's age being 13/14 she is just starting to feel out who she is and how she fits into the world around her and expressing herself through her general look. With the narrative being set out that she is evolving into a new life and finding her feet within it, I wanted her to go through this process in the exact same manner we do, where she would draw influences from her own likes along with ideas she would take from her friends and of course from both direct and indirect influence coming from Fae too.
In my head I had an idea to use layers of clothing that could be interchanged and reworked to make what would be say 4 or 5 outfits effectively becoming an almost infinite combinations of different looks that Savena could adopt at any given time. With the concept behind her being that she is kind of a bit tomboyish/skaterish, so I figured that a base set of three sets of trousers or jeans, four or five tops and a few shirts and jackets that could be swapped around readily along with a quirky new found like for steampunk, which Fae is keen to encourage as any parent or guardian would naturally do.
So I wanted to start looking for ideas to help work out quite how Savena would look but the problem being of course that I don't exactly know an abundance of kids around that age? Thankfully though during September last year we visited Amsterdam, which by luck happens to be quite a youthful city. While we toured the city I kept noting different looks to use for ideas and drew heavy inspiration from spending a lot of time on the trains running around the city. Watching everyone from waiters and waitresses right through to regular kids on vacation just exploring the city in the same manner that we were also doing. I started to notice a few trends among the people that we saw, in particular bright shirts and what looked like pyjama style trousers and that start point was set. I started to sketch ways to try integrate them together and once we came home, I set to work building Savena's wardrobe.
I decided to start with a set of black and white tartan trousers, a simple white cropped top, blue trainers and a bright orange shirt. Gradually I built up the base sets that I wanted and after testing and refining them all so that they can all work with each other whilst delivering their own unique looks both separately and combined. With all my characters their primary clothing appearance carries a hidden reference to the country or people that have inspired their look and Savena is no exception, with her favourite outfit directly paying homage to the flag of the land and people that inspired her look, the Dutch and the Netherlands.
