“Transmission “
In conversations with my fellow advocates during meetings, and other social gatherings whenever we all have a chance to get together, I have noticed that there are several ways in which we all can advocate for what we need. Some may use word of mouth, while others have more concrete methods such as writing letters or setting up meetings with the managers and owners of certain buildings to express their ideas, such as the construction of a curb cut in front of a particular building, or the making of a certain entrance way wider so that it becomes more accessible to wheelchair users.
As an artist with a disability, I advocate through my artwork and illustrations. I have heard it said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and I tend to agree with this statement. In my opinion, there can be two kinds of advocacy. One can be constructive, as in designing a ramp or curb cut in front of a building to gain easier access, as I said in the paragraph above.
The second takes a more negative approach. It is seen as more of a grievance, and I think that people tend to view it as more of a complaint rather than a means to a positive outcome. In “Transmission” I have tried to look at the possibility that just maybe people are being consumed by the technology, which they themselves have produced. Individuals have become obsessed with checking their messages on their cellphones or logging in on their iPads daily. It is my opinion that society has forgotten how to say hello to someone close by, or reach out and get to know one another.
