I like the comparison between the painting and the back and what is happening in the foreground. Very nicely done

Fascinating that we should both have been looking at this painting at the same time! Its another of my favourites; especially since its restoration. I first saw it in a Christie's catalogue in the 1990s when the previousowner had had the skull pained out and as a result much of the potential allegory was missing...

I love what you have done with it here, exploring a the possibile future narrarives that the ball might be showing; the literal and metaphoorical flood, the memento mori (carpe diem!) and the purposing of the arcane tool into something much more practical in the hands fo the plumber....

Even if I didn't say it, you probably guessed that I was dedicating this image to you, dear Joe. I've always loved passing on art, it's my passion. On this site, I've decided not to take myself seriously, my little lessons are a bit like those "fun chemistry" boxes where you play at being a scientist. This time, I wanted to take the risk of finding out if my narrative-speech would resist a kind of hoax, or introductory pun: because it's inspired by a painting by John Waterhouse, the room in my skit is inevitably flooded! You've probably noticed that I like this metaphor of a place that's beginning to be invaded by water. It's my way of telling my viewers that they should be wary of speeches that overflow the image. Certainly I believe, following Daniel Arasse, that an image thinks, or rather it makes one think, but this should not be circumscribed by discourse. Here is what leaked in my creative process: the long red dress of the young woman in the painting imposed itself on me, like a blood irrigation, almost carnal, which would give the price she must pay for the power she demands from this crystal ball. In my image, red has already invaded everything from the walls to the ceiling. Who better than a firefighter red plumber could become the hero of the situation? The female version of Mario, the plumber as an offbeat counterpoint to the seriousness of Pre-Raphaelite painting. Who will win between melancholy, symptom of this bloody flood, price to pay for a pact in the painting with the occult forces, and the freedom of the game from which the plumber comes? It is hard to say: the plumber seems to have become melancholic too, yet we do not know if she is tightening the bolts of her wrench or if on the contrary she is loosening them to let this green water flow, complementary to the red, which would dilute this overflow of a color that is too haunting. Finally, the skull is placed in an unstable balance, sliding from the pipe, it could, just like its symbolism, disappear under the waves.
